Click on the high res version of the picture for the details. Looks like they hit this depth yesterday and should be dialing things in to intersect the casing.

I heard it will take about a week to mill through the casing once they get there, so i would guess 2-3 weeks. But thats really just off the top of my head.

A week to mill thru casing? That seems longer than it should take.

Everything BP does seems to do takes longer than it should.

Well they are trying to hit something the size of a Large pizza box so it's critical that they "take their time" with the last few feet.

Better to take the time to get it right. Or are you saying you're glad BP rushed the decision to drill the well to start with?

A week to actually tag casing seems reasonable but a week to mill thru it once there seems long but i am certainly not an expert.

Is the drill pipe from deepwater horizon inside the casing @ that depth? If so what problems could that cause?

the actual act of drilling through the casing is a matter of hours. it's been done accidentally an innumerable number of times throughout history when wells collide.

the final approach into the casing and getting everything just so in preparation for milling it is what takes the time.

and there may be drill pipe from the horizon down there. there was about 3500' of pipe below the BOP stack at the time of the blowout. it may be hung in the BOP's, but it may have finally severred and fallen.

No it shouldnt be. The drillpipe would have been above the bottom cement plug as they circulated out mud and displaced w seawater.

Head on it would take a matter of hours but aren't they drilling a long window somewhere in the neighborhood of 15'? Jes' askin'.

Knut, they're coming in at a very small angle between the relief well and Macondo. I thought I read somewhere that it was about 5° but I don't recall where I saw that. I don't know what that translates to in terms of vertical depth but 15 feet doesn't sound too far off to me.

Which brings up another question. Anyone have any idea at what depth the final cement plug is?

Then again if the well is flowing around the casing and thru a failedcasing hanger the casing may not even need to be perforated.

It was my understanding that they were going to use casing guns to perforate the casing before pumping the kill mud, instead of trying to drill the casing with a mill.
