re: Top 3 teams in NL Central are better than every team in AL except Royals - oilfieldtiger
the series against the Royals was a stinker for the Pirates. They went 1-2, and were reeling from losing Harrison and Mercer in short order. The roster moves and deadline deals were still a few days away, so they trotted out pretty spotty lineups in those games. it was a really nasty stretch...

re: Is the NL Central the best division in MLB? - oilfieldtiger
You have to measure the entire division. The main reason the good teams are so far above 500 is because of their record against the bad teams in the division
The Pirates have really played played down to the Reds (4-9) and Brewers (6-6) within the division. I think all Pirate fans ...

re: Best High Performance Car that's NOT Flashy? - Production Models Only - oilfieldtiger
Subaru STi
I gotta second this. I know a lot of the thread is focused on sexier European models or Hellcats, but man alive the WRX / STi is a fun car to drive and still practical as a daily driver (i've got 2 car seats in mine). Especially around the hills and twisting roads here in...

re: MLB Rookie Review - oilfieldtiger
While not a traditional rookie, Jung Ho Kang is really making a huge impact for the Pirates since stepping into an everyday role w/ Harrison and Mercer's injuries. He's really gotten more comfortable at the plate over the last month or so. 278 AB, .299/.372/.460, .832 OPS, 137 wRC+ and .361 BABI...

re: Dodgers or Cardinals, who is the team to beat in the NL - oilfieldtiger
Pirates is correct but Burnett sounds done
some interesting quotes from him today. Basically he says it's his swan song, he's not getting surgery, he's wants to get the pain to a manageable level and go out pitching -- even at a painful, diminished capacity. i certainly admire the ...

re: Benches clearing in Cincinnati - oilfieldtiger
blanton hit byrd last night, then cutch was hit today, then phillips was hit, then melancon hit a guy that was 0-3 on the day and put the tying run on and was tossed. i don't know if blanton and byrd have some beef going back, because the situation and the players involved don't seem to have any in...

re: Pirates win..... - oilfieldtiger
I'm not complaining about the strike zone. I'm complaining that a home plate ump missed 2 swing and miss strike 3 calls. It's completely inexcusable that the guy a foot away from the batter is seeing a ghost foul tip when everyone else isn't.
the worst one was the one from the Padres s...
Why did Tubby Barnes need to have a nickname of "Fat"?
a quick check on baseball-reference finds his real name to be John, but he had yet another nickname: "soup". [link=(http://www.baseball-reference.com/nlb/player.cgi?id=barnes005joh)]LINK[/link]...

re: Who is the fattest baseball player you remember watching? - oilfieldtiger
in the Bill James' Abstract he lists a 'heaviest player' for each decade. Cecil Fielder's description takes the cake w/ "Fielder acknowledges a weight of 261, leaving unanswered the question of what he might weigh if he put his other leg on the scale." by decade up to the 90's 1870: Cap Anson ...

re: Reports show Pete Rose bet on baseball as player - oilfieldtiger
Beyond just the spread, if he's known to gamble only on his team, the implication to those taking the bets is that he believes his team will lose when he does not bet. Now, does he make an effort to ensure the loss when he doesn't bet? Does he do this as a tell to indicate "we're not going to try r...

re: Do interns actually get employees coffee? - oilfieldtiger
no, but on their first day we make a point of showing them how to make it, same thing w/ new hires. if you're going to drink coffee, you're going to start a new pot when it's empty. probably about half of them don't know how to make coffee on their first day....

re: Max Scherzer No-hits red-hot Pirates - oilfieldtiger
Boooooo. Didn't throw at him
I don't there's any retribution to come down the line either. Clint Hurdle apparently sent the lineup cards to Scherzer as a momento for him, and he pretty graciously sent them back signed for Hurdle to auction off for charity. Doesn't seem like there's m...

and the red hot Pirates kick off a 3 game set in Washington. It's taken a pretty terrific 25 game run to start clawing back some ground from St Louis, but they're 4 back now. the Liriano v Scherzer matchup on Saturday should be a good one....
Pirates may be next longest; then Orioles and Brewers
It's a 35 season drought for the Pirates, winning in their last appearance in 1979. The Pirates have won all 5 of their World Series since the Cubs last won (09, 25, 60, 71, 79)....

re: All-time World Series Classics - oilfieldtiger
The story of the 1960 world series is really pretty sensational. The Yankees were in the midst of their run of dominating the AL and MLB, and won their 10th pennant in 12 years. the Pirates meanwhile were creeping out of the cellar at the end of the 50's, after being really irrelevant for 30 years...
Yeah, I've heard that, too, and I don't get it
I tend to agree w/ you. re: The Stanley Cup Final(s): Tampa Bay Lightning vs Chicago Blackhawks - oilfieldtiger
Really terrific game. Pens made a game effort in the series. 4 games finish 2-1. A lot of folks obviously had it Rangers in 5, but I don't think anyone really thought the Penguins would make it that tight....
