You could see it coming a mile away, guys were gutted, they have nothing left, too many injuries and lost Pouliot in the 2nd to play with 5 defensemen once again.
tonight was like a metaphor for the season: hot start, injury at a tough time, it slips away. They've lost 6 of 8 and h...

re: Alabama man freed after almost 30 years on death row - oilfieldtiger
So one innocent man out of hundreds of thousands
there's been over 150 people freed from death row since the death penalty was reinstated. I am not totally in favor of abolishing the death penalty altogether, but it's clear there have been many miscarriages of justices over the past ...

re: Fresh Ice! NHL Season-Long Thread, Part 2 - oilfieldtiger
what a sequence there before the TV break. Great chances, just couldn't get it in the net. Keep putting those shots on goal, one's eventually gotta get through. Nevermind -- 3-1. Christ....
Penguins outshoot the Flyers 22-4 in the first period but 1-1. Mason single handedly keeping Philly in it
and they manage to get the lucky bounce on that second goal. damn it. If the penguins had no luck right now, it would be a massive improvement....

re: Fresh Ice! NHL Season-Long Thread, Part 2 - oilfieldtiger
I really could see either Detroit or Pittsburgh missing out on the playoffs.
The penguins are just depleted at this point. They haven't had the number of mangames missed as Columbus to be sure, but they're losing guys at seemingly the worst possible time. Hard to finish well when you...
Dupuis is going to try and return to hockey to next year
It's been posted before, but that Dupuis' essay in the Players Tribune is really worth the read. It's really quite an introspective look, and seemingly quite honest about how he realizes he doesn't have much time left, how the...

re: Anyone hike the Appalachian Trail? - oilfieldtiger
My neighbor did it. He was laid off, wasn't married, no kids, and decided to give it a go. He finished the trail, and his previous employer ended up hiring him back....
Kent Tekulve
he's part of the Pirates broadcast team. Does studio / post game stuff, and little bit of color commentary on sundays. He stepped away from broadcasting during last season, but it wasn't publicly discussed why. Turns out he had a heart transplant last fall....

re: New MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred "Open" to Eliminating Defensive Shifts - oilfieldtiger
The Pirates shift more than anyone else and have structured their pitching staff around it. They focus on ground balls, and use the shifts to maximize what they get from a handful of good offense/limited defense infielders. they've gotten there through scouting and analytics, and it's played a cri...

re: Spinoff: engineers vs. PE's - oilfieldtiger
As a registered PE, I don't really care who calls themselves an engineer. Anyone who is going to pay my salary or consulting fees know the difference. On that note, the PE designation is not an indicator of excellence - just competence and the motivation to jump through hoops and get lice...

re: Unofficial NHL Season-Long Thread: Puckheads Unite! - oilfieldtiger
Nash STOPPED!
it was pretty crazy in the arena. about 1/3 of the fans left and while the horn sounded indicating a replay, no announcement was made. people didn't know anything was up until they saw the players coming out of the tunnel. that hit on girardi was devastating in real...

re: Is 1997 the best Heisman Trophy finalist group ever? - oilfieldtiger
1946 isn't the best, but it's an interesting group. All 4 in the college football hall of fame, 3 heisman winners, and 1 NFL HOF. Glenn Davis (Army) wins NFL HOF Charley Trippi (Georgia) 1947 Heisman winner John Lujack (Notre Dame) 1945 Heisman winner Doc Blanchard (Army) ...

re: RIP Tom Magliozzi of "Car Talk" - oilfieldtiger
in the obituary on CarTalk.com, his brother Ray said:
I guess he wasn't kidding, he really couldn't remember last week's puzzler.
I think that sums up their sense of humor and relationship pretty well. My mother has Alzheimer's, as did her mother, and it's awful....

re: Jimbo has sold his soul with Winston - oilfieldtiger
it's not like this is unprecedented. Tom Osborne lost plenty of credibility over his handling of Lawrence Phillips. the write ups of both the Washington and Colorado teams at the end of Don James and Bill McCartney's tenures are pretty amazing as well....
