It was my understanding that they were going to use casing guns to perforate the casing before pumping the kill mud, instead of trying to drill the casing with a mill.

That's not what Kent Wells has been saying. I think they plan to drill right into it while circulating heavy mud. The angle they're drilling at is pretty steep (nearly vertical) so it should cut a pretty big hole.

They are at the point I believe where drilling depth will stop so they can put in the casing. This is a number of days I believe... week? Then they will proceed with trying to bulls-eye the wild well and proceed to kill it.

Mountain Tiger, sorry I have not been listening to Wells, I guess I was going with what John Wright (Boots & Coots) had said was the "common" procedure for doing this. I guess it was an "assumption" on my part....sorry for the bad info

SD, I'm not saying it's bad info. I'm just saying that I haven't heard Kent mention anything like this. That could be simply because he hasn't gone into that level of detail yet. If you got that from John Wright, then that's a very good source of info because he's the man. Do you have a link?

MT, I can't find it right this minute but I think it was somewhere in this thread [URL]LINK ], I also think they mentioned it in a video from BP on facebook where they were on the rig and talked to Mr. Wright about his part and experience in what he was doing. Sorry i can't be more exact but there is some pretty good info over on the site where that link takes you.

I remember that video. I'll go back and have another look at it. Thanks for the link, that's a very good thread going on.

If you read this thread, LINK , the prevailing theory is that the blowout is between the 7" casing and the 9-7/8" liner. In other words, the flow is on the outside of the 7" but on the inside of the 9-7/8". So if that's the case they may not need nor want to mill through the 7" casing. That also explains the near vertical angle. They want to drill just far enough to penetrate the bore hole but not far enough to go through the casing. They will pre-load the relief well with kill mud and then when they detect the loss of circulation, "pump like stink".

A ridiculous amount of mud is being brought out there, on rig and supply vessels for the kill. Some of hornbeck's big boats are being used to have double and triple redundant systems so I hear.

I dunno, seems like it doesn't take them long to cement a well.

Salazar and napolitano have at times personally stood over the shoulders of the cement engineers in bp's war room in Houston. They've been rigging up for weeks to cement this well

That gives me a lot of confidence, those two looking over the shoulder of cementing engineers....wonder if they want to know how much pea gravel they are planning to use??

Well they are trying to hit something the size of a Large pizza box so it's critical that they "take their time" with the last few feet.

Who is they? My buddy in safety told me that line.......I thought it was appropriate in the grand scheme of things.
