You're pretty naive to think that there is any actual "conservation" going on with sold hunting trips to Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe. That goes for most African nations and their corrupt dictator leaders.

The corruption filters down. Since this thread started I left my work and came home. I was in between two cars who all ran through a red light (nobody obeys the traffic laws). Other two drivers are African, I'm white. They go through and I get road blocked by the cop on his personal motorcycle. I've been pulled over before so I knew his shakedown. He was half in my passenger window holding my license when he mentioned "ticket". That's the code word for bribe. I snatched my license out his hand so he couldn't use it to get money. I make sure to keep my cash in one pocket and my cards in another just for these occasions. They look for cash when they ask for your license. I told him I had none and showed him my cards. OK you can go.

White man won in Africa today.

Upon googling, it appears the continent has seen a drop in lion population, but miraculously a few countries like Zimbabwe claim, even when hunts are higher than birth rates, that their population is fine. Also, the money rarely trickles into protection of the species in these corrupt countries.

the problem is that the population issue is from natives killing the shite out of lions, not hunters. lions are a nuisance and the primary method of slaughter is via poison. primarily, these lions are a direct threat to their livestock

Biologists often recommend culling proactively to eliminate breeding stock with unfavorable genetic traits.

Not sure if that's what's going on here.

Of course. If there are game reserves, there are biologists. Just because it's Africa doesn't mean there are no educated people.

Zimbabwe is below average even for African standards. I can promise you they have many more corrupt government figures than biologist. The corrupt government officials will be the ones making these decisions.

Unless of course the prime minister of the UAE was a majority shareholder in the electrified fence, arm guard animal reserve, that also has ties to English parliament in the shareholders. Wait... read the article. It spells out what is happening on THIS reserve and why they will cull some of the lions or give them to another reserve to keep all of the animals on the reserves numbers where they need to be.
