re: Zimbabwe to kill 200 lions because no one is hunting them anymore

Let’s say 40 lions weren’t killed because of this. 50/50 male and female which wouldn’t happen because more males are usually killed. Let’s say each of the females gets pregnant, which would not happen, but let’s just do it.
Average 4 cubs a litter. That’s 80 cubs, of which 40 will die because of a 50% mortality rate of lion cubs.
Of those 40 surviving, they would not be sexually productive for 2-3 years at best. So let’s say half are female, in 2 years those 20 females would produce 40 more surviving cubs.
So like I said, regardless of your opinion of killing lions for sport, the 200 number isn’t close to being grounded in reality.

I hate this too. Although it is appropriate for when some big city slickster rolls up to a "hunting preserve" in their 2016 GMC Sierra that still smells like new leather and shoots the 12 point that was released 50 yards away into the green field in front of him. Because that sure isn't hunting.

I love how all the hunters think how manly they are going sit back in a tree stand or duck blind and waiting for a helpless animal to walk in front of their scope. Give the animal a gun to make it a fair fight. Or better yet kill it with a knife or spear like they did before guns
At least while fishing, the fish has a chance to get away by breaking the line.
Fishing > Hunting

And that hunter was a douche. He illegally hunted that lion.
I will never understand the want to kill lions. You don’t eat them, it’s not hard when the guide does all the work for you, and if you really had a passion for saving lions, you’d just pay all that money and not kill one.
Most legitimate conservationists say there is no need to thin lion numbers and some say the opposite is true.
And I really don’t care that much about this. If some tough bro wanted to rough it on the safari and put himself in danger and kill a mature lion like a real hunter that wasn’t gifted the animal by a guide, then I see no problem with that as long as the numbers are ok.
I'm pro hunting and very pro guns FWIW.

If that's even a real news source it's owned by Robert Mugabe and his goons to inject more money into their corruption fund.

Overpopulation in a year? That isn't how this works.
Well... if they expected to kill 300 lions from safari hunts last year, but only killed 75 due to the backlash from the dentist's hunt, then yes overpopulation can happen that quickly. If their static number of adult lions needs to be x and the means of control are safari hunts and have been for years then one year of drastic decline in the number of killings can effect the number that drastically. Zero population to overpopulation would be very unlikely, but when a controlled population has a reduction as they have seen overpopulation can happen quickly.

You're assuming that the number starts at x so it will take 2-3 years... the population is already there. There are 2-3 year olds already that are maturing as well as more cubs being produced. They did not just go out and bring in a pride.

He assumed it was 40 and I just went with his numbers to explain why his post made no sense. And I also didn't include pre-existing lions from the numbers. Killing 200 now, even with your numbers, still doesn't make sense IMO.
I have no idea what the real numbers are.
Upon googling, it appears the continent has seen a drop in lion population, but miraculously a few countries like Zimbabwe claim, even when hunts are higher than birth rates, that their population is fine. Also, the money rarely trickles into protection of the species in these corrupt countries.
Again, I really don't care as long as the numbers are ok.
Cool animals I don't want to see disappear. I do find that the people that kill them tend to be douche bags claiming they are they are killing them to save them. If they actually wanted them saved, they’d just give the money and not kill them, right? It’d be better if they just admitted they want an easy lion kill gifted to them by a guide and they want a giant head on their wall.
Its like stoners trying to say they want weed for headaches. Just admit you want smoke weed (which I fully support )

I agree with you on the "hunters". I just wanted to point out that these numbers have to be controlled because these conservation areas have other animals whose population they have to concern themselves with as well. These lions have to eat something. When your hunters start to outnumber your prey you have huge problems. More can sound like a good thing until the original number cant even be sustained because their food source has been depleted. It's a balancing act and once the scales start tipping it's not good for conservation.

You're pretty naive to think that there is any actual "conservation" going on with sold hunting trips to Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe. That goes for most African nations and their corrupt dictator leaders.
