that's really cool...just recently drove from Birmingham to Chicago (and by drove I mean rode as a passenger) and I'd be a hell of a lot more willing to do it again if the car did the majority of my interstate driving for me. Would also make trips to visit family in Florida and SE Alabama a hell of a lot more feasible.

So? Scruffy is all on board with this. He would love to be able to read a book during the 3 hrs of driving he has to do.

I don't understand why car companies are trying to get fully 100% self driving cars.

Enhance cruise control so that it drives cars while on the interstates and then enhance surface street performance.

Who would love driving a motor home that could self drive the interstate portions of a trip?

that's exactly what companies are doing.

Is that an un-badged Tesla? Looks pretty awesome.

These threads make me realize I am in the minority when it comes to driving-I enjoy it.

Awesome! Admittedly, I haven't kept up on the latest efforts.

Anyone else think Phillip looks like a younger Jim Carey?

Yeah Model S. They are working with Bocsh to get this to the public within a couple of years.

They will also be able to upgrade older Model Ss to this system once it becomes public.

I was already going to buy a Tesla as my first car. So that's pretty great.

I can see Tesla being totally onboard with this, for more than the obvious technologic reasons.

This system, by using computer instead of human inputs, will almost certainly enhance battery life and range of the car.

You're exactly right. In fact, after you get to your destination the car kind of "brags" and shows you how much more efficient its automated driving was than your own manual driving.

If I could nap on both commutes to work, I'd be in love with this machine, but I imagine it has serious limitations in commute gridlock.

I kind of doubt it honestly. If you read about the automated cars, none of them have been in accidents (of their own fault) and they have been in thick traffic.

Well that would have me sold. I could nap like a boss on the way to and from work.
