For better or worse, you can now give Alexa the keys to your kingdom. Starting today, using the new August skill on your Alexa app, you'll be able to tell Amazon's digital assistant to lock your smart August deadbolt.

To make use of the skill, you'll need anAugust Connect Wi-Fi bridge in addition to the company's Bluetooth lock -- the skill works with both the first- and second-generation August Smart Lock. Then, if you have an Amazon device with Alexa built-in, such as the Amazon Echo, you can give voice commands such as, "Alexa, tell August to lock the front door."

Since it's a skill -- basically an app for Alexa -- instead of a direct integration, you have to use the extra language "tell August" when commanding your door. And as of now, you can't unlock your door with the Echo, you can only lock it and check the status. So this first step towards giving Alexa control of your locks isn't seamless as far as convenience is concerned.

I vote no. If you can lock the door, someone else can unlock it.

What say the OT?

yes because the next big thing will be smart homes

you'll be able to control everything from your phone

I know you can somewhat do this now, but its just in the beginning, this will be the norm soon

Not that big of a deal imo.

People use apps to start vehicles, record programs and monitor security nowadays.

This has such a limited application, imo though I may be missing something, that I don't see the point of the added security risk and cost. Is the only use that if you run out of your house and forget to lock the door or you forget to lock it when you enter the house, and you are too lazy to walk to the door? I don't see the point.

Sure they can unlock, but they can also just bash in a window or something. The people who go beyond just checking locks to rob places put a lot of time and effort into that craft and don't really GAF what you do to deter them, so I'm OK with an added convenience on my end.

Deadbolts just stop the lazy.

I can start mine from my phone and it has made this summer so much better for me. In AZ cars get up to like 200 degrees inside so being able to start it 5-10 minutes before I leave somewhere and have it cold when I get to it has been a life changer.

home automation thread 3 years going strong on tech board.

having a scheduled or voice-activated or geo-fenced auto door lock is nothing special.

I don't see myself using the App but I have a 70 lb dog that spends most of the day when I'm gone laying by the front window looking outside so I'm not that worried about my front door being locked anyway.

That isn't the same thing. Maybe it makes sense with lights because maybe you want to turn on the lights in an area that you aren't directly using like turning on the outside lights. But for a door to be unlocked then you must have walked through it and unlocked it in the first place. Why not lock it when you have walked through it? Why do you need to access an app instead of just turning the bolt into place? You are making things more complicated, not less.

I like saying, "Alexa set Home to 70 degrees" and she does it. Mankind is getting lazy.

so you wouldn't want to automatically unlock the door upon arriving home using geofencing if you have your hands full and dont want to fuss with it?
