Baseball, football, basketball...

What position in football?

Baseball isn't a sport, you don't cancel sports for rain.
Basketball is out too because of the short shorts.
So football by default.

Overall athleticism needed to play sport on average.

I'd say Basketball, Football, Baseball.
But I would put sports like Boxing ahead of those.

if soccer was the only sport in existence, would the US win the World Cup?

1. Basketball

There is no way anyone can argue this. This list is 100% fact.

They all require different types of athletic skills.
Straight-line speed, lateral speed, dexterity, explosiveness, raw strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, hand-eye coordination, etc., etc.
If I had to venture an opinion, I'd say a cornerback in football requires the most athleticism in the sense that it requires most of the above skills.

Assuming we're talking about the most athletic position in each sport, and by athletic we mean the likelihood that they'd be good at the other sports, I'd argue:
Baseball
Basketball
Football
ETA: I'm not trolling.
Put it this way - I'd argue Mike Trout is better at basketball than LeBron is at baseball. I'd argue Trout and LeBron are better at football than Patrick Peterson is at basketball or baseball.

Wut?
How is basketball anything BUT #1 on all of your list?

Baseball takes the least. No doubt they have out of shape ball players.
I would put hockey, soccer, and basketball at the top. They require constant motion.
Football is less than fifteen minutes of actual action.

Length of exertion required =/= athleticism required
Plus, if you've played football (don't know if you have), your arse will be worn out at the end of a game. It's a tiring sport.
