I'll be living in Youngstown, Oh for the next 8 months for work. Interested to know more about the town and surrounding areas. Any things to see or good places to eat in the area. I've done some research and it seems pretty laid back.

The United States Census Bureau's 2011 American Community Survey estimated a median household income of $24,006.[49] A 2007 report by CNNMoney.com stated that Youngstown has the lowest median income of any U.S. city with more than 65,000 residents.[50] Between 1960 and 2010, the city's population declined by over 60%. Youngstown's vacant-housing rate is twenty times that of the national average.[51]

from wikipedia.

I know what my answer would be.

Sounds like a buyer's market for sure.

Not too far from Pittsburgh, which is a cool city. Make the weekend trip and go hit up PNC Park for a game. I wouldn't have too high expectations for Youngstown.

Condolences. It is one of (no exaggeration) the worst areas in the country. I lived in Ohio for 5 years. I can't tell you much about the area because I've never wanted to go

There's a Chuck E. Cheese in Boardman.

Interesting fact: Chuck E. Cheese's full name is Charles Entertainment Cheese.

Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Niagara Falls are all easy drives for weekend getaways. If you like the outdoors, buy a cheap kayak and play around in the Mahoning River (all Class 1 rapids, good safe place to learn).

Not much in Y-town except the university. There are some bars in downtown but I have no personnel experience to judge them by. In Mahoning county, there is the strip on 224. That is the commercial shopping district(Boardman). More going on there than anywhere else. There is a half-arse horse racing casino in austintown, but if you want to gamble, just go across the river to Mountaineer in WVA.
Cleveland and Pittsburgh are roughly both a little over an hour away from Youngstown.
Cleveland has Cedar Point on the west side, and Pittsburgh has Kennywood, which is a nice little park with some good rollercoasters. Kind of a hidden gem.

For rock climbing, hiking, check out Nelson Ledge's park in nearby Portage county. There is also Mill Creek park in Y-town itself. Nice bike trails,Jogging ect.

My family is from there and everyone has fled the region, for multiple reasons. My father graduated from the university in town and my grandfather taught at Youngstown State. My parents hated the cold and fled to Florida and then LA.

The town is rough. I'd use the same thought as NOLA: if it looks dangerous, that's because it is dangerous.

At one point Youngstown was a well known mafia town. So you might have a decent chance of good Italian food.

Lots of golf in the region and close enough to amusement parks for weekend trips.

The Mahoning County Fair at the end of the summer kicks arse.

Other than that, Godspeed. Can you live in Poland or Canfield and commute?
