my wife wears her engagement ring, and I have found the most fun weddings are ones where the bride just wants to have an awesome time.

Married in 1992 (still happily married). Her Dad paid $4k and we spent about another grand. Married at the Mayport Naval Station chapel and reception at the Officer's Club which is beachfront. It was nice sit down dinner with choice of prime rib or chicken. Family members donated cake, photography, DJ service and supported open bar. Wife bought a very nice but used wedding dress. It was a nice and classy yet inexpensive wedding.

I considered it a very good sign that my wife wanted a nice wedding but was very practical and cost conscious. If you got family bucks whatever. We were more interested in starting out with no debt and getting our 20% house down payment put together.

You can probably put together a very nice wedding wedding for $10K total

Not really. We had a very small casual beach wedding and still spent more than 10K on it. The wedding industry plays on emotions of women planning it, preying on their desire to have a great wedding that everyone will enjoy. And now with social media and Pinterest....so many things at weddings now that were never even considered years ago. You can be the most down to earth, budget savvy bride and still find yourself slightly caught up in all of it, losing sight of the important stuff and getting all worked up over stupid details(like colored drink napkins for your guests and whether or not they should be embossed or just plain).

Meh, you can plan a nice wedding for around 120 ppl) for about $10-$12k.

But you'reabsolutely right in terms of pinterest and weddings as an industry. It's sickening.

Damn I was bitching about the $3,000 I spent for our wedding. Guess my wife was right in saying that was actually cheap

Nice to know I am not alone. We have 5 girls and they all know that they get $5,000 and can do what they want with it. One is married thus far and the wedding/reception was wonderful...it can be done. One down and four to go in the next 5-10 years (youngest is 18).

My wife wears a plain gold band now that we are married.

Her thinking was that an engagement has been meant, so the engagement ring isn't useful or necessary. It's quite trashy women who try to make some ring a spectacle.

I can't believe you fell for that! She's banging somebody on the side.
