re: Women who went all out on a Big Wedding only to get divorced within 2 years?

I'm a fan on eloping. Nothing better than a couple of "I dos," a weenie roast on a beach, and some cold ones.
Ya know, I want a wedding. (Not some massive affair, but a small and elegant wedding)
..But I was just thinking the other day how much I hate people looking at me and hate being in front of crowds. Eloping sounds more and more intriguing when I imagine myself walking down an aisle with people staring at me expecting me to smile.

There was something related to that about the amount of the engagement ring. I think $2k was the difference.
The ring was part of it but...

A new study found that couples who spend less on their wedding tend to have longer-lasting marriages than those who splurge. The study, by two economics professors at Emory University, found a similar correlation between less-expensive engagement rings and lower divorce rates.
quote:
Specifically, the study found that women whose wedding cost more than $20,000 divorced at a rate roughly 1.6 times higher than women whose wedding cost between $5,000 and $10,000. And couples who spent $1,000 or less on their big day had a lower than average rate of divorce.

Maybe they're just too poor to divorce.

I don't get how people even get married if they are not absolutely sure that they could spend the rest of their life with that person. Sure after a while shite might change, but after 2 years?? Please.

My friend had a big wedding and was separated in 10 months.
I just saw on FB the other day that a guy I went to HS with split from his wife a few weeks ago, and they got married July 2014.. so 7 months?
The way his posts are, I wonder if the girl cheated.

Can't speak for everyone, but my wife and I didn't even notice anyone else was at our wedding. I'm usually not too big on all eyes on me either, but I didn't even notice that day.

No gold digging whores in those lower cost categories.

So he starts a "shitty" thread and you are compelled to commit speaks volumes

This probably has more to do with the people's personalities than being a direct result of having a cheaper wedding.
If you force a woman who wants a lavish wedding to have a cheap one, just for the sake of "better odds," you haven't changed who she is or who y'all are as a couple.
So the lesson isn't really "have a cheaper wedding".
I think it is just that the type of women who prefer a simple wedding are often women who are good at communicating, not psycho/jealous, etc. Generally pretty mature.
That's not to say those who have nice weddings aren't either. Just that the princesses get mixed up in that number too.

A big part of it is probably because women get married and they instantly disappear from the gym and reappear at every Mexican restaurant and hotdog stand in town. They gain like 50-100 pounds and 1 year later the dude looks like he won a game of hogger and got the top prize. Fuggin bring that shite back for a refund.

Why would you run? That amount of money would provide great food, great drinks, great bridesmaids and a overall great time... Don't run buddy... Stay

I'm getting married on Saturday. I think our wedding is working out to somewhere between 20 and 30K, but we're paying for most of that ourselves, since we can afford it. The idea of eloping had been discussed many times, but I said I wanted my family there (I actually quite like them and have good relationships with them), so in order to be fair, we had to invite her MASSIVE family (not fat, just large numbers) as well.

I would run from any woman wanting to spend $50-100k on a wedding.
I'd run away from anyone wanting a 5k wedding.

exactly! $5k is around the price for most bands! Also, typically they will charge you $50-$150 per person for food and drinks.
