Probably a better comparison.

*what stops

BR will never be the woodlands. Why don't you get out of that shitty city and move somewhere nice?

And go where? What stops the next city from turning into BR in a few years?

Well, you seem to wish it would be the woodlands, so how about we start there.

Because it's BR. Outside of LSU, it's garbage. It won't change. Ever.

Conservative leaders that are fiscally responsible and make education a priority.

So this is all really about the ghetto culture then?

Is there not a solution to that?

Circle of life, currently the inner loop of houston is having a revitalization because people are sick of commuting and tearing down then redeveloping the ghettos pushing the poor further away from downtown. Eventually it will reach the woodlands.

Either this question is one of the dumbest questions ever asked or the OP is joking...

Probably not. I just find it odd that white communities always complain about being held back by ghettos but then dismiss blacks when they claim to be oppressed by whites.

But what can we do, actually DO, to solve BR's problems?

The woodlands was white flight from downtown houston, a lot of successful business people and engineers. They built such a nice community that companies are moving up there to accommodate them (anadarko, Exxon). So now there is a nice community with lots of jobs nearby. I would say mandeville is the woodlands of louisiana for the most part. Baton Rouge could never be that.

Agreed. The Woodlands is a great area, Baton Rouge will never get anywhere close as a whole.

Baton Rouge = dirty industrial based city, horrible public schools, high crime, bad infrastructure, crooked politicians, etc.

Woodlands = clean, great public school system, highly educated population, decent infrastructure, low crime rate, etc.

Outside of LSU, Baton Rouge is a mini Detroit.

Unfortunately, Baton Rouge is lacking in entertainment and restaurant quality. I fear this will never change especially with NOLA an hour down the road. So no, BR will never be the Woodlands, its struggling getting by as is.

Exactly.

But it doesn't need to change because many people are fine with just settling to live here, when there are much better options.

Exxon has moved their whole HQ in Texas out to the woodlands. Buildings are going up like crazy out there which in turn increases property value. The new oil boom is driving all of that production. Baton Rouge is not a town driven by oil/production...it's driven by LSU, without that it wouldn't even be on the map.

I was born in NOLA, lived in BR for 12 years and now live in the Woodlands. There is no way in hell BR will ever be like The Woodlands. They don't have the economy or the people to make it happen.

For shits and giggles, I looked up the demographic info:
The Woodlands:
Estimated median household income in 2011: $105,398 (it was $85,253 in 2000)
Estimated median house or condo value in 2011: $277,300 (it was $167,000 in 2000)
White alone - 73,680 (78.5%)
Hispanic - 11,497 (12.3%)
Asian alone - 4,581 (4.9%)
Black alone - 2,191 (2.3%)
Two or more races - 1,415 (1.5%)
American Indian alone - 253 (0.3%)
Other race alone - 176 (0.2%)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 54 (0.06%)

Baton Rouge:
Estimated median household income in 2011: $36,894 (it was $30,368 in 2000)
Estimated median house or condo value in 2011: $151,500 (it was $93,100 in 2000)
Black alone - 124,542 (54.3%)
White alone - 86,679 (37.8%)
Asian alone - 7,469 (3.3%)
Hispanic - 7,653 (3.3%)
Two or more races - 2,382 (1.0%)
American Indian alone - 397 (0.2%)
Other race alone - 332 (0.1%)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 39 (0.02%)
