All she had to do was say bomb and the plane would not have taken off.

Sad situation.

This is what I don't understand. If it's that serious just wait for the flight attendant to go away and make the call from her seat. Cell phone will still work while the plane is taxiing and for a little while after takeoff before it reaches a certain altitude. Plenty of time to get an emergency call through. Worst-case scenario--send a quick text to a family member or friend who is there to contact the police.

Maybe it's the skeptic in me, but there seem to be some unasked and/or unanswered questions in this story.

My thoughts exactly

She texted instead of called him back?! What the frick?
Yeah, I didn't get that part. I would have been on the phone and someone would have had to forcefully remove the phone from my hand

That's horrible. Did this woman seriously only reply back to his text with a 2 word text? How in the world do you not even try to call your husband immediately after receiving that text from him????

it's speed more than altitude, phones cant latch on to a tower above about 210kts, and Lord knows I've tested it a few times

Something is fishy about this story

Just an awful story.

On one hand, I can feel the anguish that would come from a situation like that, totally helpless. Kind of how I've always imagined feeling if I were lost, but ok, but I knew my family would be scared and horrified (and I couldn't tell them I was fine).

On the other hand, some of her actions don't make sense and I have little doubt that the "slap the phone down" thing is exaggerated. I know people are unreasonable, but I have to think she didn't take all the steps she could have.

I've called people from small planes and private jets numerous times. This weird ban on cell phones is weird.

Then she would have been in custody and not been able to make a call anyway

Exactly! I would not have given a shite about what the "rules" were, I'm making that phone call!

Yes, call him immediately and then call another family member/friend to get to his location ASAP. I don't care what the flight attendant told you to do.

I'd probably be showing everyone around me what was going on in the hopes that they'd advocate for me and give me space to make the call.

Southwest has such great prices though... this story will not deter me from flying w/ them.

By virtue of SW apologizing and kissing her arse, sounds like SW was in the wrong & they know it. Granted there probably isn't a procedure for this type of event, but there will be now.

The flight attendants were in the wrong for not notifying pilots

But bags fly free... there's no wrong in that.
