I paid for tux rental, dinner, and flowers. It was nowhere near $700. My date actually made her own dress. She used to love doing things like that.

Had a great time and neither of us needed to spend a fortune to look great or enjoy ourselves.

My dress was in the $300-$400 range... but it was a beaded cocktail-length dress that I wore a couple times for nicer events in the following years.

I also had a part time job so I paid for half of it and my parents matched the other half.

Dinner at Antoines (my Dad gave me money to pay for some of it so my date didn't have to). No limo. Fantastic party after.

<$500 including pictures.

Classy people don't wear flashy prom dresses anyway.

I didn't spend much, but I'm cheap as hell, and parents paid for it(I'm even cheaper when other people buy me stuff).

Guys can get away with spending very little. I hung out with snobby counts and they get their hair done in some ridiculous shape, nails, tans, dresses, shoes, jewelry, and makeup done professionally. I could see how girls could dish out over a grand for it.

I would say prom is THE major event for a lot of people who aren't going to college. And I bet a lot not going to college are coming from that lower income range. To them, there aren't any of those college memories (spring break, bar nights, football games, formals, etc.). Those memories come from high school for them, and prom is the "big party" at the end. They see it as more special. Doesn't make it right to waste more money, but I assume that's the logic.

Got to have a limo, dinner has to cost at least $100, and the girls have to have dresses that start at $500.

Sounds like the same 20 years ago. Prom is cheap then.

That's what the article doesn't get into. All these poor families have "disposable income" because they aren't forced to buy things like food and housing with their own money. The government provides that for them.

We aren't paying for their groceries, they have money for that. Apparently, we are paying for their prom nights.

I don't think I spent more than $200 for a prom. Tux and a nice dinner is all you need. Limos are overrated.

I don't remember how much was spent on prom, but if it was more than $400 I would be shocked. Even $350 would be pushing it.

The hell are kids doing now to rack up over $1000 on a dance?

Sons tux will be 90ish with shoes
Dinner I'll say $75
Corsage $30 (ridiculous for what you get but they're all the same here)
Pics $30

$200?? She's wearing a dress she already has.

And yes the "asking" is getting elaborate and ridiculous ... I told my daughter this isn't real life and not everyone does that.

Have a friend who bought her dtr for an 8th grade social a $100 pair of shoes ... I told my daughter tat was ridiculous and if it were me she'd be wearing that same pair to every prom and every homecoming ... This other mom is so not like me. They'll be buying more shoes for another $100.

Overkill.

Everyone keeps talking about her dress and your tux, but this says each family spends $1300. So unless you're going to prom with your sister, that $1300 is just for one person.

Tux runs about a 100
Prom dinner date runs about a 100.

That's all I got.

yep

my parents paid for the tux and my Dad gave me $100 was I was walking out the door to go pick up my date

and for chicks, there are plenty of "rent the runway" type sites nowadays for formal dresses

my wife uses it a lot for weddings and formals so she doesn't buy a dress for a one time event

I've been racking my brain thinking of everything that goes into paying for prom. Not everything required for prom, but what could in a realistic scenario need to be paid for (for both people):

Tux Rental
Corsage
Dress/Shoes
Spray Tan/Haircut/Makeup Stuff
Dinner
Limo
Tickets
After Party

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things here and there, but how in the world can all of this cost $1,300?

Are they including the cost of condoms, a hotel room, and Taaka Vodka?
