We didn't have a prom in 1977 because they didn't want black boys dancing with white girls. We had a banquet in the high school cafeteria instead. Guys bought their date a corsage and wore suits. No limos.

I had this old guy who worked for me who lived in a really run down house but drove an escalade. I had to pick him up for work one day and asked him why he spent more on his car than his house.

His respone "I can sleep in my car, but I can't drive my house"

We got a limo and I bought a corsage for my girl.
Maybe a case if beer and some boones farm.
That brigs the total to around 350-400.

you know damn well it's leased. They probably figure a few hundred bucks out of their govt check each month isn't a big deal overall, considering their housing is cheap and their food is free.

let me just add that getting your hair/nails/makeup done can be $500 or more. add in a $500 dress and that's $1k

Sensible people wouldn't, but if you wanted to you could easily. As SFP said a dress plus hair/makeup/accessories and you can easily get to 1K without even thinking about it.

Throw in a limo/van/shuttle/whatever, fancy dinner, pictures, alcohol to sneak in if that's your thing, etc and it can rack up.

Well, prom is kinda it for them. What's after that? Not like they gonna pay for college or anything else. Prom, then the kids out the house

That's how rational people think in these scenarios.

I do honestly feel kind of bad for SOME of the people this thread is about, because I'm sure they have the mindset of "we're broke, we barely have anything, our daughter has a tougher life than her friends...but dammit it's her senior prom and we're going to spoil her and make her feel special", which is admirable as hell. But at the same time, it just isn't practical at all.

if they are poor, wearing a nice dress, getting their hair styled, eating a nice dinner and riding in a limo will be special

even if the dress is a rental, the hair was done by a friend and the limo was shared with friends

I assume the dinner will be paid by the date

it can be a "special" night for <$500 easily

I could see getting upward toward $1k for a daughter but couldn't imagine approaching that number for a son.

tux - $150 if you don't own one
dinner - eating out is cheap when you aren't old enough to drink, wine usually makes up more than half of my bill
limo - couple hundred per couple
after party drinks - high school kids can't drink much

You guess are so blessed. Most people on here their parents gave them money to go to prom. My dad told me he was not paying for me to try and get my dick wet. So I had to use my own money.

Amen to that. Since the wife has been pregnant our dinner bills have been a fraction of what they used to be. It's great cheaper bill and I get dd ride home.

I guess when poor, it's all downhill after prom: babies, trailer park, addiction, rehab, etc.

I learned several months ago it is now common for guys to have very elaborate plans to ask a girl to prom

Yea this blows my mind. They spend so much time and effort just asking a girl to freakin prom these days. It's the social media effect. Think it started from that MTV show.
