That part of the country is either better suited for farmland or is not really that easy to build a city in.

Just look at it on google maps satellite view. The land in the plains starts to turn from green to brown right around the same line. No trees and not enough rain. It's not politics. It's weather.

theres a thing called orographic precipitation and rain shadow. look it up.

it's why everythin west of the rockies is ok and east is dry as shite until you get to the mississippi river drainage basin.

You're right. It also has LA, Vegas, Seattle, Phoenix, Silicon Valley, and well, the most populous state in the US.

You're right. It also contains serious-arse deserts. There's also a few more hospitable areas, most of which are highly populated.

Another reason is there is tons of federal (BLM) land and National Forests in those Western states.

I traveled by off road MC through a lot of this area and we were without cell service for 3 days and 100 miles each way from services in some places. It's very sparsely populated.

What's weird though is even camping in the middle of nowhere in Nevada you could still hear the jets on their routes overhead.
