Mississippi wouldn't be dead last in everything! certainly would help LA move up a notch in every category.

There was a tiny allocation made by the US gov't to look into the issue, but nothing important has happened since then.
I can't believe Democrats haven't pressed the issue at all about Puerto Rico and DC becoming states because it would be an automatic four more democrat senators and multiple more democrat congressman for the rest of US history.

Puerto Ricans are US citizens and can move where ever they want already.
Plus they pay no taxes. I would move there, but it is 2 1/2 world. Also not too safe for Gringos.

Also, DC should not be a state. It was never intended to be a state. If people living in DC want proper representation, they should move to Virginia or Maryland.
The only thing that could convince me that DC should be a state is if Statehood would somehow reduce Federal spending in the area. I believe DC receives a ridiculous amount of federal dollars per capita.
Of course, as we know, that would probably not do a thing since all these Reps live there, and would gladly keep voting dollars into their neighborhood so they don't have to live like the rest of us.
Therefore, I say DC needs to quit their bitching.

Puerto Rico isn't a state because Puerto rico doesn't want to be a state.

Last time I was there a local guy straight up told me they feel it is best that they receive US assistance (welfare checks) but shouldn't have to pay taxes or be a state.
He said it straight faced as if it was clear that they deserve the money without the liabilities. FWIW, like many non-first world places, most people there just assume that Americans are all so incredibly rich that supporting the rest of the world isn't an issue for us.

Everything is in kilometers
Drivers are third world crazy
Most roads are barely wide enough to fit two cars
Everything is in Spanish
People park wherever they damn well please
Old San Juan is a clusterfrick
If you don't arrive at the airport 1 hr before your flight out, they move you to a later one. This is the main reason it's not a state

Why stop at just Puerto Rico?
Don't forget the USVI and Guam.

The reason they haven't been admitted is that they don't have a proper paper constitution. The Puerto Rican constitution is actually spray painted on the side of an NYC subway car.
