With the high quality of FM and super sound of XM, why is it still around?

Is it because it is cheap to broadcast on?

If you drive any where near a power pole, under a bridge, or a lightning strike in the area, it goes out.

Only thing I like is being able to catch 870 in just about every SEC Town after a night game. Got it crystal clear on my drive from Gainesville to Jacksonville 4 years ago.

Is XM better than Sirius for SQ? Because there are a ton of FM stations here that have comparable or perhaps better SQ to Sirius.

1) There's only a certain amount of bandwidth available, so cost is at a premium
2) Talk radio requires less bandwidth than musical stations since vocal frequency range (300-300hz) is much more limited than that of instruments (~60hz to 10khz)

Money!

Its narrow bandwidth is perfectly fine for "talk radio", and most locally originated programs could not afford to buy time on XM. Given the mix of nationally networked and local shows its listening audience is attractive to small business advertisers, and ad time is at a reasonable cost.

So we can still listen to people like T Bob Hebert. His show from 6:00 to 9:00 am on 1350 in New Orleans may be the worst piece of crap I've ever heard. Earlier this week he was comparing Jergens lotion to Vaseline for his program director to use while the show is being aired from Saints training camp.

I pray for Mike an Mike to come back just so I don't have to listen to this clown again.
