Why do people (men, mostly) want kids?

We don't live in the days of "carry on the family name" or needing someone to work on the farm. You aren't handing the crown over to your kid to be the next king. Just curious, do most people plan the 1st child, and why? I get that parents say how wonderful it is, after the fact, because, let's face it, you are kind of stuck. But do most men desire children? Does the mothering instinct of the women influence you agreeing to a child? I just wonder how people decide that having a child is a smart financial, emotional, physical and physiological decision. Frankly, they look like a total burden.

How old are you?
For the record I'm 34 and my wife is 38 with no kids. I personally can't stand them little bastards. Kids annoy the shite out of me. Just this weekend I had a cousins kid that's 5 sucking on her thumb and it drove me crazy.

Well, a lot of people have the biological need to produce children. We, as humans, need to eat, stay safe, and frick to maintain the species, so it's been imprinted on a large section of the population to keep doing those things.

I think it's pretty damn selfish to say you don't want kids.
That being said, I think it's wise to know you don't want them and not have them instead of having some and regretting it.
