You know poor people? And despite this thread, you know who they vote for?

People who don't want to talk about it are either insecure or know it's a taboo and don't want to make others feel insecure.

This is the answer. Most people don't want to talk about it because they are insecure.

Shame.

We live in a culture where people are ashamed of themselves.

My wife had a friend who always asked those kind of questions. For instance if we perhaps bought a used car for one of the kids, we would hear this:
Where did you get it?
What year is it?
How many miles?
How much?
Paying notes or what?
How much a month?
Paid cash?
Ever been wrecked?

My fathers generation kept that kind of information very tight. Even people of means were fairly modest. It was considered rude and pushy to ask those questions. I can agree.

It was actually more out of modesty than shame.

Why do girls I'm trying to pick up at bars get offended when I ask how much they weigh?

a co-worker woke up next to this girl, and blurted out

how much do you weigh, I couldn't believe he did that, but yup, he did.

And those of us that write the paychecks don't want them talking and wanting more.
