If it is someone I am relatively close with and it is a product or item I would legitimately consider buying, I usually won't hesitate to kindly ask, "If you don't mind me asking, what did that cost you? Feel free to decline answering."

Also the fact that people do discuss income and sometimes ask me about it really brings my piss to a boil. That is inappropriate.

But why?

If I asked where your kid went to school, you would probably be ok with that.

I've asked my friends how much they make, but I'd never ask my parents or someone I didn't know well. I think some people feel like they're being judged based on how much they make, who they vote for, etc

The only actual answer I have received.

Thanks.

It is just human nature. Some care about it more than others for sure, but I don't really see what good can come of it. In my experience, people I work with have discussed it openly, which is obviously not good in an office environment with a close team.

Yes, If I asked a stranger, I could see the issue. But friends and family and it comes up over a discussion....

Does your wife/girlfriend take it in the arse?

Have you been sued?

Do you lease or buy your cars?

Do you take any prescription drugs?

How often do you have diarrhea?
