We've become a soft society.

It's ok to suck.

It's ok to have excuses.

Everybody gets a ribbon.

It's always somebody else's fault.

I'm honestly not trying to be a douche here though. This is a topic that hits home, I've had some fricked up things happen in my circle and have watched stunning, talented people fall into this pattern of pill seeking.

Mental health is a serious issue in this country, and we need to start seriously approaching it without a profit angle. The proliferation of Anti-depressants is eerily reminiscent of the electroshock and inpatient gold standard of yesteryear.

I'm not fricking with my brain, but for short bouts with narcotics. Permanently altering it seems dangerous.

It's clear who is offended and why. Did you have to pop and extra zoloft today because I upset you?

Good. As someone who has dated someone with depression they deserve someone better than you.

You're dense. It's pretty clear I wasn't referring to people who have legitimate issues and need the medication.
I'm referring to those who have this hangup and think they need it when they really don't. If they would just put in the effort to address their minor issues and what's preventing them from being happy, they wouldn't need the pills.

I hate sharing personal experiences on here but whatever.

I have to take SSRI's because my brain does not function the way others do. I do not feel pleasure or have a state of happiness like most. I went for 15 years of constantly being depressed before seeking medication. I pretty much wanted to die every day since I was 16-17. Now I was 100% functional but I'd drink a massive amount. I'd get hammered all the time. I couldn't just have 1.

Talk therapy never did anything for me. I tried, I just couldn't illicit the emotional empathy or investment you needed to see progress.

I always thought it was a bunch of crap but I understand this stuff is needed. Watch me cycle off the stuff and my personality will be near death.

I used to drink. Heavily. While taking meds

Imagine what that did to me.

Which leads me to the next major problem with these cocktails, mixing them with alcohol. Few 18-25 year olds can self regulate in this set of conditions.

They tell you to go out with friends, get your life back. But you can't drink and you live in a booze ridden society. Seems logical. So you're only gonna have one, maybe two. Next thing you know you wake up naked in your kitchen and you're friends have a helluva blackout story.

Honestly, I don't care who uses what in the individual sense. I do care that our society has to find a solution for every perceived problem, and the subsequent issues that arise. On one hand, we're advanced enough to find "root causes" for things. Whether it is a shooting at a school, a conflict in another country, or a 20 year old going through rough times. But, we know that the response can be overboard and destructive.

People are too defensive, usually, for us to have a productive discussion on this topic.

I agree, but this is not an individual dynamic, it is a sweeping social force that few want to acknowledge and discuss without preconceived notion. They're just good, m'kay?

Root cause is simple, a poorly cast die, stricken with a poorly developed emotional intelligence. The real question becomes, is it even plausible to fix? Seems like a lot of trial and error with few actual, tangible results.

Probably cause they think it's some kinda cure. I've suffered from depression my whole life and I've never taken any pill. There is no cure for life other than to just deal with it.

People don't need a bottle of pills they need to just bottle it all up inside.

BINGO!

People can't find a way to cope with life. Doctors (at least general doc's) aren't trained or educated enough to deal with mental issues of their patients. So to keep the revolving door of patiens turning at lightning speed, they scratch off a script to make the patient "feel better".... The core of the problem is still there, but as long as the patient is off the doctor's back, he'll keep adding the refills to the script. Vicious cycle.

Pretty much. This is on.

You can go through my post history and pretty much tell what's medicated and what isn't. Sad story.

"Short bouts" with narcotics?
You know this isn't good for you, don't you?

Also-one factor about the depression meds being handed out with no counseling is that many insurance policies won't pay mental health benefits.

Women take antidepressants because they prevent suicides. Because if my wife stopped taking her meds, I'd surely put a bullet in my head.
