It is infuriating to me how thoughtless, cruel, and ignorant people are towards mentally ill people.
I can agree to a certain point. But, there are reasons for the stigma in many cases.

Just imagine how people react when they find out someone is BP. They are shocked, horrified, avoid them, make jokes, etc. Now substitute BP with pancreatic cancer.
A person with pancreatic cancer didn't lock herself in the bathroom with a knife for 3 of the worst hours of my life. Ended with me literally busting down the door and talking her down "off the ledge".

A person with pancreatic cancer didn't come out of the bedroom with a pistol in her hand an hour after we had an argument about...hell, I don't even remember what the argument was about. I just remember a bitch "going to take a bath" came out with a S&W in her hand and wanted to continue the argument.

You know the old saying "If momma ain't happy ain't no one happy". You should have just let her win that argument. Then she wouldn't have had to pull a gun on you.

Yes, those are terrible things.

Dangerous actions.

But they are part of the illness. I'm pretty sure that person, when stable and in her "right mind" would never dream of hurting you. And probably feels terrible about doing the things she does when she's in an episode.

It's no more her fault than it's the fault of the person with pancreatic cancer dying and leaving their child without a parent.

In both cases, these are manifestations of the disease they have.

Do you think she chose to have BP? Don't you think she would LOVE to be cured?

I know that mental illness is different because it causes unpredictable, confusing, damaging and dangerous actions. But just keep in mind. Mentally ill people are just that, ILL. They didn't ask for this, they are victims of a terrible malady, just like a diabetic, cripple, cancer patient, or downs syndrome person.

No better, but certainly no worse.

That's not a mental disorder that's called being a woman.

Question: If one wanted to speak with a mental health professional, where would you start? Assuming you don't have a primary care physician.

Many companies offer help lines that you can call anonymously. They will get you in touch with a mental health professional and even subsidize the costs. And it's all done third party so the company doesn't know who you are.

Yea, until she train-wrecks everything in your life. Starts trouble with family, co-workers...

I use The Family Center in OLOL. It is a psychiatry group. Sometimes, it is hard to find a psychiatrist who is taking new patients.

Yea it's pretty weird. When I was really struggling, I would be just about to fall asleep, and then a jolt would suddenly wake me up. It was fricked up. 3 days and 2 full nights of that shite. I seriously thought I would never go to sleep again.

just keep in mind that psychiatrists are not psychologists and many (not all, but many) are not great therapists. study after study shoes the added benefits of talk therapy on top of medication.

Good point.

And some people think that psychologists and psychiatrists are the same thing, and don't go to see a psychologist because they're afraid of being put on medication. My ex-wife used that excuse for a long time.

All true points, but it still happened and not a lot of people can put up with that nor should one have to.

Yeah, but it is an illness that can have dangerous side effects to other people. Side effects that can change your life in a very bad way through no fault of your own.

It's not the fault of the dog that got rabies either, but I'm not going to cuddle it.

I hear ya. It's definitely not easy to be close to someone with mental illness. And no one should force you to. Not should they look down on you if you choose to break away. This too is no different than someone dying of cancer.

It's just a sad situation all the way around.

My hope is that mental illness will one day lose the dark ages stima it has and gets the same support as other diseases.

Oh, yeah. I'm an alcoholic, too. I know "alcohol is a depressant and just makes things worse". Actually, I'm better overall when I'm drinking.
