this is just insanity on multiple levels

how can we have any sort of a fear when we spend (even under this administration) more than like the next 10 countries combined?

we could cut our military spending in half and we'd still be spending FOUR times what Russia spends on their military

I hate agreeing with you, but this is absolutely the truth.

People who cite "military cutbacks" have no idea what the US spends on military in relation to the rest of the world.

Russia's army is built out of orphans and citizens too poor and/or stupid to go to college. And criminals but that goes without saying.

When I enlisted in 1998, I was coming from a middle class 2 parent household with a 3 generation strong tradition of serving our country. I also graduated HS with a 3.8 GPA (4.0 scale)

Since my service, I have gone on to graduate from LSU, build a wonderful and prosperous career while also passing on the tradition of service to my two children.

You sir can go frick yourself...

I think the bottom line here is that we are still ahead of the Russians in some aspects, namely air power (though that lead is shrinking) and naval power, which that lead looks to be quite safe. However, when it comes to ground forces, our lead over the Russians is dwindling rapidly and in Europe has totally vanished all together.

Let's take a comparative look at both forces, starting with air power since so many people like to focus on this aspect of modern warfare. Here's the latest information I can find on the strength of Russia's air force....

quote:

In 2012, the Air Force was made up of:

38 fighter squadrons (7 operating MiG-29s, one operating the MiG-29S, 2 operating the MiG-29SMT, 7 operating the MiG-31, one operating the MiG-31B, 4 operating the MiG-31BM, 7 operating the Su-27P, 8 operating the Su-27SM, 1 operating the Su-27SM3 and Su-30M2, 1 operating the Su-35S, 1 operating the Su-30SM)

15 bomber squadrons (9 operating the Su-24M, 2 operating the Su-24M2, 4 operating the Su-34)

14 assault squadrons (10 operating the Su-25, 4 operating the Su-25SM)

9 intelligence squadrons (operating the Su-24MR, and various UAVs)

13 training and testbed squadrons

Let's focus for a minute on the fighters the Russians have since these are the aircraft that have to win control of the air. They show to have 38 fighter squadrons that mostly operate to following:
Mig-29

SU-27

SU-30

SU-35

All of these are modern, very capable fighters capable of going toe to toe with our fighters. If you don't believe me, click on the links I provided and compare their performance capabilities comparative to US fighters.

From what I can find, while the Russians, at least in 2012, had 38 fighter squadrons, the US on the other hand has 75 fighter squadrons including training, reserve, and national guard squadrons. However, when it comes to where we would more than likely have to confront Russian fighters, namely over Europe, we currently only have five fighter squadrons in theater. (list of current US Air Force fighter squadrons)

So, while we have a pretty substantial lead in fighter squadrons over the Russians, in Europe we are very outnumbered. If a conflict were to arise there, a massive redeployment of fighter squadrons from the US would have to take place very quickly to prevent the Russians from gaining at least air superiority over the skies of Europe. And this risk of Russian air superiority is made worse when you add in the huge numbers of mobile SAM's the Russians possess.

So the bottom line when it comes to air power, the Russians have fighters just as modern and deadly as our own. But the US has a substantial overall lead in numbers. However, that lead evaporates when you look at where these two forces would most likely square off against one another, namely over Europe.

Next, I'll take a comparative look at the ground forces of both countries.

This is just plain asinine. I'm in right now, have an upper middle class family, graduated high school with a 3.5, mom and dad still together and are a great example of what a marriage should be. The reason that I joined was because my parents wouldn't have been able to have three sons in college at the same time and have another going two years after I went into college. So I joined to help pay my way.

The grunts that I serve with are without a doubt the most hardworking, dedicated, and ingenuitive people I've ever known.

Very rarely do you have the types where a judge has to tell them "either join the military (USMC for most) or go to jail"

Your argument is played out, not correct; and therefore, invalid. Goes to show you have no idea as to anything about the mightiest military the world has ever seen.

Go back into the hole where you crawled out of, stupid fricking gump.

Oh, and another thing, frick you.

We would never go toe-to-toe alone with Russia over the skies of Europe, so that point is pretty lame. Once you figure in the German, French, British, Italian, and Polish forces, it wouldn't even be close.

You can't just base these assumptions that because we spend so much that automatically equates superiority.

I think our military is superior, but not because of the almost trillion $ spent on it.

A vast majority of that money is buddy deal contracts, red tape, and just general waste ($500 screwdrivers anyone?).

Anyone with a logical brain would admit that most countries operate their governments more efficiently than we do. Our superiority is because of technological advances in weaponry and tactics and because our boys and girls are some of the baddest mofos walking the planet.

The largest difference in our military and the Russian military is our economies.

We have a great deal more ability engage in a sustainable conflict.
