Negative but married into a fairly Irish-sourced family.

They will argue about anything, it's always someone's else fault and none of them are ever wrong.

Ha ha. Your ancestors were raped by the Vikings.

I told colorchangingtiger (whoever's alter that is) the same thing, and I think it freaked him out and made him think I could see him through his web cam, because he didn't respond and I killed the thread, as usual. In actuality, after he said he was Irish and hairy, I was just playing the percentages. Most hairy Irish men are redheads. Us blackies don't get very hairy, for whatever reason.

The "Irish" are not ethnically/genetically distinct from other Celts. Basically, St. Pat's Day is a celebration of Patty bringing in a Roman belief system to separate themselves from the other Celtic nations and peoples, and it has been a perpetual disaster ever since.

Presbyterian Scots are actually far more Celtic in heritage and beliefs than the identity-confused Celts of Eire, who adopted a non-Celtic Roman doctrine.

Why do the Irish even distinguish themselves as different from other Celts? Never understood it.

Wife's got some Irish blood way back so my kids have some. As for me, mostly English/Scot with German (great-grandfather) and French (early ancestor that came over from Boudreaux France to south Carolina in early 18th century) mixed in.

I have the Irish "heritage", but not all up on people's face about it. I'm an American, that's all.

It's not actually the flag of Northern Ireland. That would be the Union Jack. The flag above was the flag of Ulster up until 1972. You can still see the red hand of Ulster outside of the republic.

I'm not comparing myself to anyone else on here. I just think it's important if you think you're Irish to know the history of Ireland, and where your family stood on why it's still divided. You can bet your ancestors certainly cared about it.

Well, the Scots were only Protestant due to the Pope excommunicating them for fighting their fellow Christians (aka, the English who were raping them prior to the Scottish War for Independence) during a crusade against the Muslims. When the people of Scotland didn't stop rebelling against the English, the Pope excommunicated the entire country. That's why the Scots (and later the Scotch-Irish who included the Ulster Irish) were Protestant.

I just get a kick out of some people who claim to be Irish and celebrate St. Patricks Day but aren't familiar with Irish culture or politics.

I'm descended from Irish immigrants but I'm not Irish.

I also agree with this. My father in law tells me all kind of crazy stories from back in the day. The family is from Armagh so needless to say they are not big fans of the English.

My family's Scotch-Irish. They were kicked out of Scotland for rebelling against the English too many times

Supposedly, 90% of people from the UK can be genetically traced back to the Iberian Pennisula, so I think I'm going to start telling people I'm Iberian.
