I don’t know where you found this map, but it appears to be fictional or an amalgamation of maps from a variety of periods of history. There are a number of problems with it…

1. It shows the Brazilian Empire which was founded in 1822, but what would have been the United States at that time is listed as “British America”.

2. Russia most definitely was not a republic until the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917 and the declaration of the Socialist State of Russia.

3. There has never been a country called “The Republic of Sibr”. The closest thing to it was in 1918 when a provisional government was formed. But by 1922, Siberia had been swallowed by the Soviet Union

4. The Holy Roman Empire ceased to exist in 1806 when it was wiped off the map by Napoleon.

5. Turkey did not exist as a country until 1921 following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

6. Syria was not a French possession (it was actually a French Mandate) until after World War I.

7. The area marked as “American Republic” seems to be someone’s attempt to mark most of Texas with northern Louisiana in a fictional country.

8. Great Britain never owned Alaska.

9. Great Britain never owned Persia.

10. I can’t make out the writing (I’m on my phone) but the white blob between North & South Mexico never existed.

11. Mexico was never divided into a North Mexico and South Mexico.

12. Canada didn’t become a dominion until 1867. Before that it was a British Colony, meaning the Dominion of Canada can’t be on a map with the likes of the Holy Roman Empire at the same time. Also, by that time what is marked as “North Mexico” on your map was already part of the US.

13. Austria didn’t become a dominion until 1901, raising the same issues I laid out with Canada.

14. French Indochina did not exist as a French colony until 1887.

15. Great Britain never owned the Philippines.

16. Saudi Arabia did not exist as a country until 1932.

17. Afghanistan was never a British Colony, though the British did invade in the mid-19th century.

18. The borders of Poland as shown on this map did not exist until 1945.

19. The area marked as “Socialist Central Asia” never existed as a political entity. The closest thing to it would be when this area was part of the Soviet Union. But this area was split between 5 different Soviet Republics as part of the USSR.

20. Finland did not exist as an independent country until 1917.

21. Great Britain never owned Greenland.

22. Great Britain never owned Peru

23. Great Britain never owned Ecuador.

24. Great Britain never owned Columbia

25. Great Britain never owned Venezuela.

26. Great Britain never owned any part of Central America other than briefly in the 18th century parts of the costal area of modern-day Honduras and Mexican Yucatán.

27. Whatever they’re calling “European Russia” has never existed as a political entity other than when parts of this area were a part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union.

28. Thr “Manchu State” has been one with China since the 17th century when the Manchu Quing Dynasty conquered China. The only exception to this was when the Japanese invaded Manchuria and set up the puppet state of Manchukuo from 1932 to 1945.

29. Great Britain has never controlled any part of the islands Hispaniola, including what is now the Dominican Republic

30. The only Spanish colony in Africa was Spanish Oran, lasting from the early 1500s to 1792. Spanish control of areas of the northwestern coast of Africa shown on this map did not take place until the early 20th century and then only consisted of roughly half the area shown.

Where did you find this abomination of a map?

Sun never sets on the British empire

The original version of that phrase was used to describe the Spanish empire.

“The empire on which the sun never sets“

The main difference between the Spanish and British empires is their navies. Not only was the British empire vast, they also controlled the high seas that linked their empire.

More than half the world's population uses English as their 2nd or 3rd language, so, I'd say the British

It's really no contest...Britain controlled 26% of the planet at one point.
Insane how far Britain has fallen when you compare that to the state of the country 2024.

You could say the same for Rome when talking about falls from grace as an empire.

Probably be the United States before long.

The Mongols were the first to figure out how to ride a horse full speed and still shoot arrows accurately. It freaked everybody out.

It allowed them to dominate. Credit to the Mongols.

Gotta remember there are really two colonial eras 1500-1700s and 1800-1900s. I go with Spain for the first and the UK for the second.

Agreed. Wasn't the Spanish Armada superior to the British Navy in the early era?

For territory expansion, sure. But would you really call those colonies?

I think the Brits hood the distinction for colonization

That map was too horrible for my nerdy sensibilities to remain silent. Whoever made that map should be tied to a tree and beaten about the head with a stick.

I went straight into the army from high school. But I’ve studied history for 40+ years and have an odd ability to remember useless information, particularly history. I’ve been told I have an almost photogenic memory. I’m pure murder at games like Trival Persuit and Jeopardy. In high school I was to Scholars Bowl who Bo Jackson was to football.

But at the same time, if you tell me something, especially your name, I’ll forget it in 2 minutes tops.
