I agree that right now the only super powers are the US and China. The rest would just be to fill out a list of strong nations.

It's true that Germany and Japan (maybe a hand full of others such as India, France, UK) do not have strong militaries. However their economic and industrial strength would be an advantage in creating a strong military in a relatively short period.

I mostly agree with this article

quote:

No they absolutely do not. Not even close. Germany’s leaders would shite their pants if the US pulled out all military support. There’s stories about their soldiers using broom sticks in training exercises because they didn’t have enough functioning rifles. Japan is mostly concerned about what happens in their part of the world from a military standpoint.

I completely disagree with your comment

In 20 years China will be the only super power. They will continue to release new viruses until we are completely cucked out.

Russia is not the global player that China is. Russia doesn’t the economy that’s even close to China’s. Yet Russia is ahead of them. The comment you linked talks about power. The term superpower has a particular definition as it relates to countries. It isn’t just power with some extra stuff.

Explain what about my comment is wrong. Again how are you going talk about Germany being a superpower when, as of right now, they couldn’t even defend their country properly? Japan also relies on the US for defense. Military is a crucial part of being superpower.

Power and influence are not 100% based on military. Sure, that is a component but so are several other factors. I feel you are basing your argument solely on military might.

No I’m saying it’s based on a multitude of factors. I’m bringing up military because it’s a very important factor and an area in which Japan and especially Germany are lacking in. Superpowers are the most powerful of the powerful and most influential of the influential. Germany and Japan are powerful countries in general but they are no where near where the Brits where in their height, or where the US is now. China is the only one that comes close.

There is no official definition of the word but all include some level of mastering the seven dimensions of state power. Like geography, population, economy, resources, military, diplomacy, and national identity. You can’t be severely lacking in one area and still be considered one.

The whole point of the word is to distinguish certain countries as extremely powerful and influential in a multitude of ways. Germany and Japan cannot compare to the US or even China in this regard. So it’s defeating the purpose of the designation if you’re going to group countries with vastly different powers together.

Do you disagree with his assertions? People Seemingly forget this term was coined in WW2 in response to the development of weapons of mass destruction.

Yeah, this is right on the money
The USA is the only nation on earth that can move 150,000 military personnel anywhere on the globe, while maintaining air supremacy and controlling the oceans. China can’t cross the Pacific in force.

USA and China are currently the only superpowers. China is about to pass the USA as Number 1 military power. The rest Germany, Russia etc are great powers, but not superpowers.

Need to factor the Instruments of National Power(DIME)

Diplomacy
Informational
Military
Economic

All factor into whether a nation can be classified as a Superpower.
