So far the general consensus from everyone seems to be (in no particular order):
-Colorado
-Utah
-North Carolina
-Virginia
-Oregon
-Washington
-Texas
-Colorado
-Utah
-North Carolina
-Virginia
-Oregon
-Washington
-Texas

Couldn't be more off, Roger. Ballard was damn near the spear head of all the change. Wallingford has changed the least and Georgetown has become old Seattle.

To live or to work?
Working is EASILY Texas
After you have made your OT millions though, there are plenty of places in the Pacific Northwest that would be nice to settle down at.

I'd rather work in a state where employers give a shite about their employees
I don't know what the best state to live in is. I've lived in a few though, and I'd rank my experience as such:
Massachusetts
Louisiana
Indiana
Texas
Missouri
Mississippi
Georgia*
*I lived in south Georgia which is admittedly the worst part of Georgia. I love visiting Athens and if my experience had been limited to just Athens, it'd be #1 or #2.

Michigan (in particular the upper Peninsula)
Tennessee (such a diverse state)

Is there a strong job market up there?

Please explain how Texas affects the employer mentality in a way that anybody the surrounding states do not.

Anything over 4% is bottled or canned. Plain and simple. Local breweries do not keg their beer often and when they do they totally change the recipe to make it 4%. Spent a week in Moab and salt lake in May, visited 3-4 local breweries and they all hate the Utah beer laws as much as I do.

Just drink bottle beer you elitist douche. Every state has their goofy laws. Louisiana has some parishes where you can't buy liquor at all.

Best place I have ever lived in my life is Maine. Think of it as Alaska Northeast. The worst place I have ever lived in my life and I shite you not was Hawaii.

What island did you live on and what did you do there(work/military etc.)?

Grew up in Louisiana and have been in CO for 5ish years now. Can confirm that it's one of, if not the, greatest state to live in.
Endless outdoors things to do.
World class fresh water fishing.
Weed.
Booming tech industry.
Red Rocks concerts.
Healthy people.
Craft Brews (No, not Bud Light Lime)
Every time I visit Louisiana, I feel bad for people who are still stuck there. I enjoyed my time growing up there, but it keeps you small minded and there isn't shite to do.
That being said, the population boom is making rent/home prices in Denver sky rocket. Actually considering moving into the mountains and just working from home there.

To generalize:
Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming
If we are talking smaller political subdivisions then other areas are in play.

Those states seem like they would be awesome to visit but Idaho, Montana and Wyoming do not seem like they have strong job markets. I've never been there though so I am not 100% sure.
