re: When do the years in your life really start to fly by?

Shouldn't have started this thread, getting bummed out now
Well, look at it this way: As we age we all slow down--but Time and Death proceed at a steady pace that just appears to gain speed. Eventually these twins of our destruction overtake and annihilate us, and we disappear for all time like a fart in the wind. Our fates are sealed and there's nothing we can do about this. So cheer up a bit.

Im 26 and I feel like I graduated HS yesterday, but its been 8 years this month.
High school went by extremely slowly, though. It easily felt twice as long as college.

I'll be 29 in a few months. The last few years have been lightning. I'm also extremely busy, so that's probably why.

After kiddos, time started moving at warp speed for me.

Not to repeat what dozens of others have said, but having kids was a big life-changer for us. My wife had our oldest when I was 26, almost 27. She just turned 6 and it seems like it has flown by. We were only married for almost 4 years before our girl was born. Now our son is 11 months old and I can't believe my wife was mentioning his birthday coming up next month already.
It seemed like a "school year" back in high school took forever. Now it just seems like it was yesterday when my daughter was on Christmas break from Kindergarten, and she had 2.5 weeks left and she's out for the summer.

WOW, I'm on the exact same wavelength as the OP. Just noticed this thread, but I've been on a trip all afternoon, just looking back and reflecting because my little girl turns 4 tomorrow.
I think the answer to the question for me is 18 and graduating HS. My first 18 years seem like an eternity where I can almost remember every moment from like 4+..... But shite just comes out as quick little snippets, almost like I've fast forwarded through the last 16 years. It's crazy to me how fast the last decade and a half has flown by.

This is a little something that I have come up with why time goes by so fast the older you get. That is because the older you get, the more time you have behind you to reflect on.
What I mean by that is that when I was in high school, and tried thinking back to when my dad fought in World War II, I could not relate to that, it seemed so long ago to me. I mean its 1969, and 1945 was in ancient times.
In reality it was only 24 years past. I couldn't relate to it because I was not born then so I had nothing to compare that amount of time to being that i was only 17.
I mean 5 years seemed like an eternity. Now at my age, 5 years is like last week, because i can remember things that happened 5 years ago that stand out in my mind and it seems just a short time ago.
So what I am trying to say is that time seems to fly by the older you are because you have more years in the past that you can actually make time comparisons to.

Completely agree. I remember most everything up through about college. Gets a little hazy around law school. Once I hit the work world, I can't remember one year to the next, other than basically by sporting events or weddings.

Kids really put a perspective on time - they seem to grow so fast. Tell all the youngsters with first born as they "brag" that junior is about to walk cross the room on two legs, "She's gonna walk for a long time". Appreciate this very short time in your life.
If you think time is going by at a faster pace, wait till you reach the point you can see the finish line, but can't judge the distance. As long as "friends" stay 20+ years younger, it's not a bad road to travel. You certainly appreciate it more than you did in your youth. :-)

Well but the number of days says the same, so the year isnt changing its unit of measurement, simply your view point of the year's value changes.
It has to do with the way your brain processes information as you get older.

I think routine, change, and rate of down or free time matter.
When I have been doing/experiencing a lot and significant things in my life changing, it seems to slow down. Like things that are impactful or significant. Maybe it is awareness and remembering significant things occurring that make that time seem longer.
On the flip side when I am just in a routine at work where I am busy without a lot of free time but just working (which I do not consider significant or impactful experience) weeks seems to pass like a day passes when really significant things are happening.
Constant routine, especially workwise is what makes me feel like time has flown by and essentially makes me feel I missed out on it.

When kids come along, yes time starts to move along but it really starts to fly when they start school.
Seems like just yesterday my oldest was starting kindergarten and now I have a sophomore and a 7th grader.
Sometimes I look around and I'm just like WTF?? How did I get here?

This is true. Childhood summers seemed to last forever. The first two years of college seemed so vivid. Seem to recall every weekend. First year or so out of college is the same way. Everything is new and feels new.
You have to try and remember to slow things down and appreciate every detail. Years seem to fly because you are always waiting for something. There is nothing to wait for anymore. Enjoy it. It is hard to do.

After 21. I think the anticipation of being able to drink makes time drag, then once that hits there really isn't another great milestone until you get your social security check, and it seems like most my age will never see theirs.

Depends on ur kids. But mine started when I was around 40, the last ten yrs have flown by. Plus I've started thinking about my mortality ,which I never really did before. You young people slow down and enjoy life because before you know it you"ll be old. And man we only have one shot. There are a few things I wanted to do in life but Father Time has creeped up on my arse. I know we've all heard it, but live each damn day to the fullest because we only have a limited number.

Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.
