When did the idea that we're all "created equally" become a widely held belief?

First of all, this isn't about race but I'm sure that's what this thread will devolve to.

We all know it's bullshite. I'm certainly "better" or more valuable than some 45 year old who can't hold down a job, and there are a lot of people "better" than me.

Why do we feed our children these lies? This is a big problem in our society imo.

ETA: When did people begin to move away from "equal under law" to simply "equal?" That is what i was trying to ask.

Well you've got enlightenment thinkers like John Locke coming up with stuff like Unalienable Rights and equality of people like 500 years ago or so.
Im sure they weren't the first though

Dumb post is dumb.

I don't feel like explaining the whole thing, but you can believe that all men are equal and still think some are better or worse. This refers to how people should be treated under the law, not a statement to the worthiness of every person.

To missed the entire part of the phrase that says "created"

Under the context that you are using it Point is that color or creed isn't what makes you "better" than another. It's the basis of democracy


See above for how your definition of the phrase is wrong as well

i'm talking about people who think we're all "equal."

Einstein > random gangbanger. His life is worth more, he's more valuable, they're not equal or the same. They were not "created equally."

Those words written in the constitution and the Declaration of Independence were ripped almost word for word from enlightenment thinkers like Locke, Thomas Hobbes, ect...
And those guys WERE talking about everyone

Ok I will take a shot at this.

We are all created equally, now that has absolutely zero bearing on you hypo of 45 year olds. what they did for those 45 years is what separates them.

Albert Einstein was "worth" no more than your earlier mentioned gangbanger at birth, what separates them is what they become.

We come into this world with equal opportunity, what we do with that opportunity is up to us.
