Teens are inherently stupid. In fact, many of them are so stupid they've fooled themselves into thinking they're smart.

Back when I was in high school, me and a bunch of guys were over at a buddy's house hanging out and running our mouths about something, and I happened to notice his dad sitting there listening to us with a smirk on his face. I asked him why he was smiling like that and he said something along the lines of, "Oh, I was just sitting here thinking that if I were anywhere near as smart today as I was when I was 16 that I would have conquered the world by now."

I didn't understand what he was getting at back then, but 15 years later, I still remember that simple comment and the older I get, the more profound it seems to become.

Bingo. That's why I say teens are inherently stupid. I'm speaking from experience!

Next time tell the kid, "You're acting like an a-hole, and nobody likes an a-hole." You'd get the same reaction from mom, but your message would hit home just as well as what you originally said, albeit more succinctly.

Its a fine line to walk. We have a friend that has a kid that gets really violent with other kids and adults. After he pushed my wife down, I picked him up and looked him right in the eye and told him if he ever touched my wife again I would do exactly to him what he did to her.

He is 7

You physically threatened a 7 year old?

15 year old kids do that when some old queer is bragging about legalized gay marriage. Get over it.

Sounds like you disciplined the mom more than the kid. that's more likely what she was pissed about.

But I'd have done the same.

It is a different thing, though, when a child is misbehaving in a way to hurt or insult another person. If a child does something to another person, then it is appropriate for that person (or the parent, if the other person is a child) to tell the offending child to back off if the parents of the offending child won't do anything.

This. I occasionally run into a little shite at a playground whose parent has clearly checked out. On their phone, or just generally not around. If the kid is bothering kids (mine or others), and no one corrects it, I weigh the situation. Sometimes I've said something firm to the kid, sometimes (in the case of a family of fat Hispanics whose brat was screaming in the faces of my kids while the mother just sat there 10 feet away), I told my kid to yell back or just walk away because that kid was being annoying. No idea if they'd have understood me if I'd said anything anyway.

I have no issue calling out a disrespectful 15 year old, but using the "back in my day" b.s. line will most certainly fall on deaf ears.

Well being a teacher, it's my job. Obviously I can't out my hands on them. But a stern talking to happens frequently with some.

My house my rules. Other parents know my rules. If they don't like them the kids don't come over. If ok with parents I welcome them with open arms. Easy.

Sounds like OP just put a little rude turd in his place.

Saying something? Meh.

Your title made it sound like you got physical or took something away from the child. That's never a good move.

Kids are taught to be productive people or frick heads at home. Obviously, the mom doesn't care that the kid is a little frick head.
