I'll try to keep this short...
My co-workers threw a baby shower for one of our employees and his wife last week. We were told to RSVP if we wanted to partake in the catered lunch. I didn't RSVP due to a conflicting conference call. I did, however, have a leftover cupcake after they were placed into the all-employee break area.
I was asked to - and did - donate $10 toward the shower gift. This morning, I get this email:
...this is a friendly reminder that you each owe $8.00 for the food for the baby shower...
The $8 is no biggie, but should I reasonably be expected (like it's a job requirement) to pay for a lunch I didn't participate in?
I suppose I'll go ahead and pay, but I'm wondering what y'all think of this.
Too long...I'll just say PIIHB as my standard answer.

It was probably a mass email to the original invitees. Your coworker is more than likely not expecting you to pay.
However I'd approach him/her with $10 in your pocket and just go ask how it went, it was unfortunate that you were not able to go due to XX and ask if there is anything else you can do to help out.

Be a real boss and just offer to pay for the entire lunch

Refuse to pay, really be adamant about not paying since you didn't go.
Report back to us on how this goes. Just paying the $8 will make this thread boring.

Talk to coordinator.
You did not rsvp.
You did not eat.
Dont kick in.
The point of rsvp is to provide data upon which to base
Purchases and costs.
Its not your job to rescue people who have no clue.

I would pay it - but it's total bullshite.

It's bullshite, but it's also $8. I'd pay just to avoid it. If it were $20, that would be different.

I went ahead an paid my $8...

Congrats, you're now the office doormat. The only thing that can save you is the guy who was on vacation and didn't even get half a cupcake paying up as well.

Wuss
You in a small/large company/office?
I like being in a large office building in the government when it comes to shite like this. I don't donate to any of this shite and no one cares.

Pay the $8 but let e-mailer know that you did not RSVP due to a conflict. Will be nice gesture while correcting the inappropriate action of the planners.
Posted on 7/5/17 at 12:15 pm to Eli Goldfinger
$8 to avoid a bunch of bullcrap at work is worth it.
If you can make a potential problem go away by throwing pocket change at it, pay it.
You're permitted a smirk and an eye roll when you hand over the money, though. Coworkers suck, don't they?

It's definitely the most family-like workplace I have ever seen. So maybe that's part of it.
Thus, the correct answer is pay the $8.00 and don't say anything else about it.

It depends. How politically correct are your co-workers?
Posted on 7/5/17 at 1:40 pm to Jcorye1
Pay for no other reason than politics. They legally cant make you pay for shite though.
Posted on 7/5/17 at 1:43 pm to Eli Goldfinger
Jeeze at the number of pushovers who just pay to "avoid the conflict".
My first response would have been a reply along the lines of "I didn't RSVP and I didn't go to the lunch am I still expected to pay?" Based upon that reply I would decide to pay or not. Maybe they accidentally counted me or some other error I would pay without a problem. Maybe they didn't mean to send me the email? I sure as heck wouldn't walk in there with my tail tucked between my legs and fork over my money for no reason, even if it's just $8.

Am I weird that if I was management I would expect to pay for stuff like this?
Nope. It was my first thought. Unless the office is throwing/paying for an event, I don't see why it needs to take place at work at all.
So glad I don't have coworkers.

Don't pay, a little office drama helps liven the day up.
Once the food is left out for all to eat, it's no longer part of the event. You didn't attend the event, you are under no obligation to pay for it.
I would be pissed to get an email like that if I was the guy on vacation. frick that lady.

Pay the $8 then randomly take a couple of folks' lunches out of the fridge to break even.
There are your two options. choose wisely

I'm wondering what kind of spread you could get catered for $8/head.
Oh, and pay up. Not worth the drama if you opt not to
