Paying isnt about avoiding conflict.. its political currency for anyone in management positions. Play nice and cash in favors later or people may just be willing to do them for you anyway. They wont if youre an unlikeable count who argues over 8$.

By all means though die on that 8$ hill.

Pay it, wait a few weeks, and then tell them that your S.O. is pregnant. Have them throw you a shower, demand that they order food from somewhere that's $16/person, and you're back even. You'll have to cover up the lie at some point but you'll have 9 mos to figure that part out.
