I've read comments from Indians to that effect.

"Colonialism was bad for my grandfather, but great for me."

That Indian chick from slum dog millionaire was the only Indian that made it move. Very slim pickens on the red dots

Super poor and lots of warlords

The question is how would it be different, not the same

Well India as a country has the 7th largest GDP (3rd largest GDP-PPP) in the world. But there's a massive gap between the upper, middle, and lower classes. Also while there's a lot of corruption (some connected to mafia groups) there's really nothing in terms of warlords.

Think Africa 2.0. Or had the west not had hold odor for as long as they did, most likely they'd have been over run by Muslims or China by this point.

I guarantee you there's more than a few attractive Indian women. There have been 4 Indians who have won Mrs. World. Most of the Indians you've probably seen are South Indians who look quite different from North Indians (of which almost all Bollywood actresses are). Some of them are almost fair enough to pass for white.

legitimate cases of institutional discrimination

You do know that discrimination under the caste system was outlawed years ago, right?

We would probably have to still listen to Alannis Morisette.

let's not forget a rigid caste system that is one of the few legitimate cases of institutional discrimination left on the planet

As someone said, the caste system was outlawed years ago. But the upper classes (As in wealth, nothing to do with religion) do look down upon greatly on the lower ones and treat them like garbage. However many government funded programs (including many universities) give more preference to the lower class than even to the middle class. Quotas exist being an example.
