Considering the traditional Indian portion of their culture encourages bathing in a toxic river next to people shitting and dead bodies floating by...

I assume they'd be even worse off than they are

let's not forget a rigid caste system that is one of the few legitimate cases of institutional discrimination left on the planet

The british military and trade sectors revolutionized india. Can't imagine without, perhaps China or Russia would have done the same, with less efficient results.
India has severe infrastructure and poverty issues. K-12 being the biggest challenge. More kids in poverty than the US pop total.

Now the educated govt and industrial sectors are great business partners and some of the most ethical I've dealt with over there. Can't say that about China or Pakistan.

Have many Indian friends here in the States, was a Groom in another's wedding. I think half of India came to that 9 hour ceremony. Incredibly wealthy and gracious people. Don't think Brits had anything to do with that. Education and wealth opportunities order any human life toward values we hold sacred, Hindu or not.

Forgot one thing. If you ever meet a man who says he isn't afraid of death, he is either a liar, or a Gurka. Gurkas were Nepalese warriors but were mercenaries for Britain and Indian military. Best friend one can have on earth.
