im bout to move out of my parents house into a rental home closer to where I work. The only appliance I need to provide for myself is a washer and dryer. I'm at lowes now pricing a few. What should I look for? I'm pretty sure I don't need a $1200 Samsung or lg.

A plug for each is pretty essential.

Check out consumer reports. They give some ratings and talk about what they look for and which each machine does well and poorly. If it's just you, I'd stick to the machines with the smaller capacity, no need for a massive washer if you're only doing laundry for 1 person.

Buy speed queen brand. No frills. They will last for almost ever.

You don't need anything fancy. You will never use all of the fancy washing programs.

Get a top load washer with the basic hot, warm, cold option, and whatever quiet/sound deadening insulation option you can get.

Not sure if serious....but for washers its top loading and front loading. Many people have reported issues with front loading washers that don't seem as prevelant in top loaders.

There is a thread on here where a guy bought one that said 'clothes washer' on it and he washed towels in it. It broke.

Top load washer with agitator is what I'd go with. I find the ones without an agitator don't wash the clothes as well. I've had a washer with and one without, so I speak from experience. And actually, the one without the agitator was newer and more expensive that the old one I currently use. That's my two cents...

From the ones I've looked at so far, the more expensive the washer, the more flexible the tub on its axis. Is that a good thing?

Just buy like the second cheapest you can get. You will probably be moving a bunch over the next few years and the shite is gonna get beat up anyway. Spend about $6-700 on the set and buy a good set when you buy a house.

Get on Craigslist and pick up a pair. You won't spend more than 400-500 and you can get a name brand. Stick with the old school design and you'll be able to fix nearly any problem that arises with them.

Front load vs. top load

I ended up buying a brand new Samsung top-load set from Best Buy for under $1300.

Went to my parents' house over Christmas and they recently upgraded to some ridiculous high-end Samsungs. Must say, they are impressive.

That said, I've been using a GE washer and dryer, $399 each, going on 7 years now with no issues.
