You are the one saying Catholics can't be southern.

Exactly, east Texas absolutely part of the south.

You are firmly out of the south by the Hill country.

if the state fought for the South, I consider it Southern. We are all unique and should embrace it instead of shaming each other because we don't all do and eat the same shite. From Texas to VA you'll find many more likenesses than differences, but the differences make us individuals and that is what we should celebrate.

y'all sound like people i know who talk about each other's accents. hell, we've all got em and we all sound the same to someone not from the south. i think it's all stupid, childish, and ultimately pointless.

Not really. South La is Catholic, which is not southern. Our cuisine is not southern either. Our accent is not southern. We are our own d

We are a subset of southern culture. You think everyone from the rest of the south has the same food, accent, or religion. The low country culture is different from hillbilly culture
People from the piney woods and hills are different from folks from the delta
There's a bunch of Catholics in Greenville and Natchez and they sure are southern
A old money family from Charleston probably has more in common with a creole from New Orleans than an old money family from upstate SC

As a cultural stereotype, the south is Protestant

South la is catholic

As a cultural stereotype, southerners eat a different diet than south la

As a cultural stereotype, southerners have a completely different accent than south la

Yes, there are individuals that are exceptions, but in 3 of the main cultural buckets of "being southern" we in south La are in another bucket

Are we closer to the south than the north? Absolutely. But I think we shift away from the cultural definition of the south as a whole

According to the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB):

SREB Member States

Alabama

Arkansas

Delaware

Florida

Georgia

Kentucky

Louisiana

Maryland

Mississippi

North Carolina

Oklahoma

South Carolina

Tennessee

Texas

Virginia

West Virginia

These are the "southern" states the Louisiana Teacher Unions use to determine a fair average salary....

They are...I included them as the exception to states bordering Gulf or touching a gulf state. Maybe honorable mention wasn't the right word...

East Texas, which is a larger area than some southern states, is the south.

Did your state secede? Yes? You're a Southern state. If not, you're not.

Louisiana from I-10 South is quite different from I-10 going North...which I consider to be part of the common south. East Texas is part of the south in my book as is the southern fringe of Missouri and southern Kentucky. The Florida panhandle is southern but not the rest of that state. South Carolina. Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas are card carrying members. West Virginia and the rural rust belt wish they were part of the south. Large cities like Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston are also excluded as they are soulless "International cities" that will one day practice Sharia law.
