Yeah, it really isn't about about the snow and ice to me. It's the people who fricking panic at the first sign of loss of traction and slam on the breaks. The people who think they can make 90 degree turn like it is summer time. It's like everyone turns into an 80 year old cripple who can't see past the dashboard.

Unfortunately when you live in a highly populated area, it only takes a few panicky people to tie up the major road arteries for hours.

This entire state literally loses their mind at the mention of snow. It's embarrassing reading social media during times like these. People lose all common sense and throw caution to the wind. They'll literally freeze to death in their car instead of getting out and walking to the the nearest public place for help.

Yes I'm mad

Frankly, I'm disappointed in Southerners. Everyone knows all white ones have chains, matches, and a gas can stashed next to the hood in the closet. Snow/ice should not have been a problem.

yep, luckily I live outside of town and everything was cancelled before I had to leave yesterday. Although, one of my friends works and live in Birmingham and he was stuck on 280 for 7 hours. He ended up having to stay in a shelter last night.

This is the main problem for areas down here. Its a huge chain reaction. Pretty much like dominos falling. All it takes is one idiot to fall and its all downhill from there. Get caught on the interstate during a thunderstorm and you would think you're in the middle of a cat 5 hurricane. People slam on brakes, put their flashers on, and make everything 10x's more dangerous with their so called "safe and cautious" driving.

We used to go skiing every year out west and would fly into salt lake or reno, rent a car and drive to condo in mountains, and back and forth to ski resorts everyday with no problems. Its the people that cause the majority of the problems not the conditions.

Yep, and it only takes one to start a chain reaction.

The inclines we have at major choke points in Birmingham make for very dangerous icy conditions

I drove to work this morning and realized that if you can drive in the ice and not encounter another vehicle, you're fine. As soon as people see another vehicle shite like this happens.
i had the same thought. i watched someone drive into a ditch this morning on perkins

Also, what made it really bad was that the roads were all pretty warm - temps had been in the 60s on Sunday, so the snow that fell at first melted, but the temps dropped as the day went on, so all that melt then froze, and then had snow stick on top of it.

I think a lot of the internet mockery is from people who didn't realize this (I didn't, until today). Pictures look like, and most early news only mentioned snow, and not much of it, by Northern standards.

Ice is terrifying to anybody, and even if you're too stupid to be scared shitless by driving on it, physics will prevent you from doing anything worthwhile, anyway.

If you see me laughing at anybody in Georgia or Alabama for the next couple of days, please mentally add "except for the ice, of course, that stuff sucks" to anything I say.

Then you've never actually tried to drive on actual ice.

I'm sure all those jackknifed 18 wheelers were drivers that had never seen "a couple of inches of snow."

The problem was ice + pile ups = gridlock.

But of course no one down here knows how to drive in that shite. Why would we?

i have a 4wd vehicle so snow has never bothered me here in nashville but all it takes is a **MODEST** incline on the interstate and a few shitty cars that cant handle it (i'm looking at you, bmw) and you start to get a bottleneck because once they've slid backwards and start constipating things, cars that would have normally made it over are coming from a dead stop and they cant make it either..rinse later repeat. 8 hours later you're sitting in the middle of the interstate outside birmingham.
