Disagree... School is way too structured, kids have to do as theyre told and there is very little room for originality/creativity... i had a happy childhood, but i absolutely hated being told what to do and having very little control... Adulthood, and the work force, is very different from school in that adults, for the most part, control their daily activities and can actually make choices for themselves... i find myself every day having to be creative in trying to outsmart or outwit the competition... Of course there are exceptions, people who follow a certain path in life doing exactly what their parents did, or what theyre 'supposed ' to do-- but if youre doing in that way, then youre doing it wrong.

If you were to read thru all 8 pages of this thread, you would see that 75-80% of the posts say something to this effect... i dont have kids, so i dont have a dog in this fight-- but i think saying that homeschooling produces socially-awkward kids is a lazy generalization.

Right. Lazy and ignorant. And I don't see the virtue in fitting in. What I've observed in many these homeschool kids is greater Independence, creativity, initiative. I guess some people feel insecure when they run across a person who is not like all the other sheep.

We hired a home school kid who had an engineering degree from a lesser SEC school. He has no ability to communicate with people. He has panic attacks if someone gives him a problem to handle. Not saying it's his moms fault but home school kids turn out weird.

i don't think most are wrong on this thread in their opinions on both sides.

we've met the homeschool kids you imagine with no social skills and try to use that as a reminder to keep our kids social. we keep them in sports, church, camps, everything humanly possible to make sure they have some social skills.

we enjoy having the time with them at this young age, but know how important it is for them to have a normal life.

our main complaint and why we went from public to homeschool was that my oldest was getting about 45 minutes a day of legit instruction and then sitting around the rest of it. at such a young age, i just think it's a waste of time to send them away for 8 hours and spend about an hour of it actually learning. that being said, they're both going back at 6th and 4th grade next year. basics are learned and i don't think there's anything that they'll be behind on.

we've had the opportunity to do a lot of fun stuff that kids their age would not be able to do. so no regrets.
