I wasn't home schooled, but I have friends who have homeschooled their kids. If the parents are dedicated to it, homeschooled kids will be more well rounded and have a higher IQ than public school kids. But, parents have to be fully engaged.

Other than really conservative Christian schools, no school seems like a better fit for homeschooled kids than A&M

There is at least one judge in NW Louisiana that won't grant custody to one parent if that parent is going to home school the child.

Which one?

One of my nutso friends is considering homeschooling if the public schools require vaccinations for all kids. She's an antivaccers. Her kid is doomed.

It's all depends. If it's just some asshats that think they can educate their children in everything without any educational experience, the kid will be destined to fail.

The best ones I've seen have come out of cohorts where it's a group of kids meeting a handful of times a week for content and are capable of doing independent study. And that also exercise some state laws that allow to participate in sports teams/academic teams so they're still getting plenty of social exposure.

Utter bullshite. HS is what you make of it. There are so many diverse groups of homeschoolers now and endless opportunities for socialization, sports, music, etc + awesome apprenticeships, coops, charter and private schools that allow participation.

Your perception is dated and even then flawed. Are we really that uncreative and preprogrammed a people that "traditional schooling" (which of course is a very very young institution with at best mixed results) is normative ?

Most homeschool kids aren't weird because they were homeschooled, they're weird because their parents are fricking weird and that is who taught them how to be people in this world.

And yes, most homeschooled kids are fricking weird because of this.

There is a minority though that turn out really well. They have two very dedicated parents, with at least one that has actual teaching experience, that mandate their child participate in group events such as sports, charity, summer camp, etc. every opportunity they can.

OTs opinion of homeschool?

I think it's a great way to UNDERdevelop a kid's social skills,
The beauty is that it makes the helicopter parent feel like they're doing something special. If you're worried about too much diversity for your kid to attend public schools, then send them to a private school.

Public school would never be an option for me, and I'm not fig enough to home school.

I'll also say that almost all homeschooled kids I know or knew, have been extremely kind people (and usually very book smart).

But that can be a detriment because they often do extra-curricular socialization with other homeschool kids and families. This doesn't expose them to the brutality of "mean kids". Not saying bullying is good in any way, but being around assholes does teach you that a lot of people in this world are assholes and shouldn't be trusted.

I think it all depends on the parents. If they're socially fricked up, so will be the child.

When a home school kid was introduced to our jr high, he was ran out the school for being weird. Like, the family wore bike helmets while riding in their minivan.

In my adult life, I met a kid that had been home school until 9th grade. The dude was a stud and Mr Popular right away. His younger siblings were nice and knew how to interact with kids and adults.

My only opinion about it is that everyone should have the right to do it.

This is also a very apt description of many public school districts in this country.

It ultimately depends on the school system for me. I simply wouldn't live where I don't feel comfortable sending my kids to school. But many systems just aren't good enough for me to send my school there if I did live there.

Public school systems are really just glorified government funded daycare. The vast majority of time is wasted or used grossly inefficiently.

Any weirdness a child has by being homeschooed is a function of the fact is the weirdness of the parents who feel they need to home school their own children.
The parents tend to be overly religious, over controlling, passively racist, or a combination of all 3.

Tim Tebow was the only successful home schooled person I have ever known of.

My former roommate was home-schooled by his Fire and Brimstone mother with a 7th grade education and of course... he didn't graduate either.

In what state are you not allowed to do it?

You're allowed to do so in Kentucky by simply withdrawing your child. But if you want to put them back in the public or private school system you have to show proof of the work they've done. And the state has the right to do a welfare check if they're concerned you're neglecting your child.

If you're home schooled can you put all kinds of accomplishments on your college applications? You can say you were valedictorian, class president, homecoming king/queen, Student Council President.

You should ask her if she is really anti-vaccine or if she is pro vaccine safety. She might not be as crazy as you assume.
