we must have a lot of those on the OT

well engineering is a big field and O&G is a big industry in the area

but it's also absurd for these kids with those salaries to act like this is the norm for the rest of society

There was absolutely no way that that house in that neighborhood will appreciate over time with those blue tarps all over those roofs.

I have no idea where this could be. I did a smart thing - I bought the crappiest house in the neighborhood - I'd rather be pulling their values down, than them mine.

I haven't enjoyed a bunch of appreciation, that's for sure - 16 years, and only 53% total - just a little over 3 1/2% per year from baseline - certainly not the 10 to 12% in bigger cities.

But, the times they are a changin'.

What reality is that? Why sign a lease when I could live for free while I found my house?

According to the inflation calculator that I just looked at it's $135,000

I wish you would have posted this earlier so I didnt have to look through 8 pages of people saying how much money they make. Which has nothing to do with the OP question.

Are you able to see emotion in my posts? It takes a lot to upset me. I have no issues with it at all, but don't sit here and say you make less than 100K and live comfortably, while living with your parents. He pretty much ruins every thread on this board.

Get fricked dumbass. I can't help it that you have zero reading comprehension. There is a huge difference in choosing to live with my parents for convenience vs having to. I didn't have to, I chose to.

family combined is like 110k. I feel like we dont struggle for money but I also feel like I dont have near the savings I should. Not sure how much my life would change if I boosted that up another 30k but there are also no children in the picture yet.

This is pretty much my wife and I. We're right at $120K but it feels like we're always just a little behind where we should be. Now, we're still paying off mistakes we both made between the ages of 19-22 so that has a lot to do with it. Trying to get all that shite knocked out before we have a kid.

If your combined income was $200,000 would you have still chosen to live with your parents?

we pay our credit cards off each month, pay some student loans, her car ($500), and a 1500 house note + other bills. I feel the house note is the biggest thing but really didnt feel i was buying out of my price range or anything when i purchased.

Because you claim I'm not living comfortably just because I made a choice to save some extra money for a couple months.

You imply it when you say I'm not living comfortably like I claim. Don't play stupid.

Yes. Why spend the money on a lease if I don't have to?

I guess I should also mention my parents' house is 5000 sq ft and we had our own master suite away from all the other rooms.

We did this with my grandparents for 6 months growing up in 1996. I remember watching the Olympics with my grandfather.

It was fun as a kid. We had a buyer on the condo and my dad wanted to get rid of it ASAP and the other house we were buying wasn't going to be ready until December.

that's pretty close to my philosophy, at least when it comes to work i don't really enjoy and that takes me away from my passions.

if it's passion-related and i can enjoy friends and family while doing it, then the time and effort don't matter.

I purposely took a 50% pay cut so I could live my life. unfortunately, i did it just as all hell broke loose in the RE market and economy generally.
