Did you miss the part about her living in the Bay Area?

Single and make low end of 100k. In the Bay Area that is not a lot considering rent prices and prices of everything else. Making low 100's there is absolutely no way to afford a house, living comfortably in an apartment can be done: being able to vacation, drive a new car, eat out at nice places.

Then move to an area you can afford. That'd be like me looking at a house in Hunts Point

I like how everyone says the South like it is some uniform place. Just in Louisiana the cost of living is much different in various places. 100k out in the sticks is much different than uptown New Orleans. Houses are selling for over $200/square in certain New Orleans neighborhoods. You can buy a 6000 sq foot lot for the same price as a house in other places.

We moved to that area after college, I worked in Santa Clara, and it was great. We moved back down south to get married and buy a house. Big time up there. I wouldn't settle for a 2 hour commute from who knows where, so we'd have lived in San Francisco in a super expensive shoebox or just paid rent forever. Our one bedroom rent was the same as our mortgage on the coast, so it would have been doable if that was the only consideration.

Loved that place. Wish I could afford it...

Nope, unless I want to have a couple hours commute or live in the ghetto. 2/1 houses around me start at over 500k and that's before the inevitable bidding war with Chinese with all cash offers

As others have mentioned it really depends on where you live. 6 years ago my wife and I both made really good money. We lived in Huntington Beach, went out to eat every other night, drove nice cars etc. Once we had our boy, my wife became a stay home mom and we had to make some big adjustments to our lifestyle. Even thou I was making just under 100K, that alone wasn't enough for us to stay in Orange County.

We ended up moving to the Inland Empire, bought a nice house that would be double in price had we remained in OC and stopped going out all the time. It definitely took some getting used to, but we live very comfortable with what we have now.

You can still live in the NOLA area relatively cheap compared to many places. You don't have to live in a neighborhood with 500,000 homes to live there.

In some places, there isn't much of a choice.

Houses in the Bay area are absurd.

Before this went off on its tangents, was it decided that 100k is still a significant number?

Since the average household income is less than half that, hitting 6 figures is still a milestone, especially if only going back 10-15 years.

Well I am a teacher so I would've said $75k is a substantial amount of money.

Why did this thread get so many responses? Are salaries that intriguing?
