I remember my old roommate telling me that he would consider himself a failure if he wasn't making $100k by 30...

...he is now 30 and selling cellphones at a mall kiosk

reality hits hard sometimes

that was about someone making $50k...

It's still not true. A single person can live very comfortably on $50k a year while doing all that stuff. (well maybe not the $700 child care, but a single person shouldn't have that, right )

My fiance and I make around 100k combined. However we are both 26 and have zero debt.

Is that a good start in the opinions of OTers?

That's a good start in he opinion of FACT.

Then again, I think that your mortgage estimate is high by a few hundred dollars.

It's not high. That's including homeowners, flood, PMI, property tax, P and I. And it also includes only putting 3.5% down. That's what it will cost in the NOLA and surrounding areas anyway.

I enjoy low key also, but a friend of mine bought a house in ball a year or so ago. He was all excited about it. I pulled up and thought it was the biggest waste of money I had ever seen, even more so than a doublewide. There was absolutely no way that that house in that neighborhood will appreciate over time with those blue tarps all over those roofs.

And close on our house next month

And we lived on our own for two years prior to living with the rents while we found our house. Nice try though.

The original part of our house is 97 years old. Addition is 8 years old.

So I chuckle at people who complain that their house was built in the 1990s.

My house was built in the 60s, that just means I don't live on a lot that was a cane field 5 years ago

This and the flood insurance in NOLA were factors I didn't include.

ETA: the assessor's office in NOLA is starting to assess a lot of homes at a higher value these days. I know that some have expressed concerns over whether living in NOLA will be affordable for the working class person in the coming years. Thoughts on that?

Depends on the area. In NOVA I think 250k for a household income makes you about average for most areas.

I hit 180k last year. Single, no kids, and work 2/3 of the year. I realize it's out of the ordinary. I'm hoping to be >200k this year.
I've made >100k every year except my first 6 months working after graduation. 5.5 years out of LSU now.

I figured since we were talking about someone only making $50k, they wouldn't have $30k to put down on the house. Just wanted to give a realistic showing of how one could live off $50k salary and still own a home and have a decent car etc.
