As a single guy, you can save for retirement and still live comfortably on a little over 100K in the Houston suburbs. If I got married and she didn't work, my standard of living would take a pretty big hit though.

It wasn't that hard to do for me.. Granted my house was paid for and both cars.. made a career change took less money to be happier.. Worked my way back up..

I can't even contemplate why I'm paying $350 a month insurance for 2 cars.

By the time I pay car insurance, phones and cable - that's almost $1000. That's 20% of my net income.

(ETA: I'm still slugging at my student loans - it is no single thing - it is a death of a thousand cuts.)

Well yea, in that case $50k is a shite load of money. That'd be like having a $50k salary while in college.

Yeah...50k without a car or house payment is probably close to making 100k.
