It is extremely expensive to have the best military in the world. The F35 was a bust but good in theory.
In a somewhat related example, the reason we need to keep healthcare private and for profit is that 99% of all major medical breakthroughs and new drugs are created in the US because people can make money off of their hard work.

The waste in it's own administration.
No private company could survive if they operated like our federal government. Top pay and benefits for excessive and redundant people and entire agencies.
Google it. They know it exists and yet do nothing. Both sides.

True story - I know a federal program manager who had roughly a hundred thousand left over near the end of the fiscal year. The authorization was set to expire that year.
In order to use the money instead of returning it to Treasury, he hired a firm to have his entire department (no matter what their actual job was) take Lean Six Sigma training.
Now, $100k is a rounding error but what made this so outrageous is that the whole point of LSS is to avoid waste.

Look at the amount of money spent on anything having to do with defense and national security. No telling what the hell they're spending well over a TRILLION dollars a year on.

Between GOVT programs and excessive spending on fringe benefits, I agree. The worse part is that it's unsustainable. In order for everything to operate you have to tax those who work, and they often don't see feasible benefits. Ironically, even the poor who are supposed to benefit do not necessarily get the tools to make it out of poverty.

The massive corporate welfare handed out, often through special tax breaks no one else gets, and thus championed and protected by the tea-party types who claim to be fiscally responsible as they claim a cut in welfare is a tax increase. This distorts markets far more than social program ever could.

The obamas, the clitons, and every other politician along with government welfare checks handed out every month to the "democRATS" and government leeches that think they're entitled to that money. We all know who they are.
