The government overpays for everything and not by a little. Being in the military gave me a first hand look at how much money our government waste.

war on poverty
It took a while for someone to hit on it, but the war on poverty has done nothing but create a self defeating whirlpool of downward mobility that just grows larger and larger the more money is thrown at it.
The system needs to be reformed to provide aid, eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse, and structured STRICTLY with the goal of returning recipients back into net contributors to society, rather than dragging them into an endless cycle of poverty.

Probably all of the "pork" they give away..
What is considered 'pork' is usually local projects, like a new nature center, or a library. Everyone wants to cut 'pork' as long as it's someone else's District.

I'm retired and I agree. SS should be limited to what you put in. The govt should give you a choice of a check for what you put in (with accurate interest) or a lifetime annuity. If that ain't enough for the retiree to live on, he can just pile up in with his other broke retiree buddies in their old college housing and get them a keg and a couple of lids.

Outside of elected officials anyone that works for the governmental jurisdiction.
All local, state, and federal jobs should be filled by contract employees.
And the military of course. We need a strong military but the spending there is out of control.

I always have been told Social Security could not sustain itself. Unfortunately that graph pretty much confirms I wont have at 50 :(
It would if we lifted the cap
Only temporarily and then it turns into a true redistribution program.
At its heart, SS is a Ponzi scheme and the triangle is beginning to invert. When it started, there were 13 people paying into SS for every 1 receiving benefits. Today, it's 2.9 paying in for every 1 receiving. It's expected to be 1.5 per 1 in 2050.
That's unsustainable.

Stimulus packages.
Borrowing money from China to implement US projects.
Anticipated - subsidizing peeps or insurance companies for Obamacare
State - Anticipated - Gas tax for non-road work

Thanks for the graph. It's a nice break down. Is there something like that out for when we had a surplus? I was probably too young and don't really know what a surplus would even look like. Was SS significantly less or something? What's changed in terms of money in and money out?

Military by far.
What private sector company will employ you and then if you quit three years later they agree to pay for your healthcare until you die.
The military will.
This crap is unsustainable.

It looks like the last time we had a budget surplus was in 2001, but I can't find a breakdown of the budget for that year visualized.
The main difference between then and now is that taxes are lower and military spending is much higher. This fact created the huge deficit that we see today. Thanks Bush! I'm only halfway kidding about that. Increased military spending was a huge necessity at the time, but cutting taxes at the same time was ill advised.
Social Security has always been bloated and the budget for it has just continued to balloon over time. The US is paying out more for social security than it is taking in with taxes on your paycheck. By the time either one of us is old enough to collect on SS, there won't be anything there to collect on.
From a very simplistic point of view, there are three things we can do to fix social security: increase taxes to cover the bill, decrease payouts to SS recipients, or seriously rework the budget for SS to make it much more efficient. All of these options are unpopular and that's why you rarely see any politician talking about fixing SS in a meaningful way.
