People don't understand how important that was. That was the moment that the Deep State overthrew the elected government. They've been in charge ever since. Right now, they're locked in a death struggle with Trump, who is the first person since they killed JFK whom they haven't had controll over.

The biggest secrets being withheld are the ones the public has no interest in. The massive size of the bureaucracy in terms of people - people that are privy to information, suggests that any secret will be very difficult to keep. In the modern era where honor and integrity are hard to come by and impossible to purchase on a permanent basis, secrets are routinely spilled.
The highest positions in our nation are filled with narcissists loyal mostly to themselves. There is no incentive to keep secrets, particularly after government employment. Whistleblowing is routine. The opportunity to profit by their experience is why so many write their memoirs - most of which offer nothing remotely shocking. They simply don't have anything provocative to sell.
People that say "I used to work in government and the average person would have their minds blown by what I witnessed" are simply full of shite. The average person would not be surprised in the least by anything they had to say about their experience.
Of course I still work in government and all of the above is what I'm being paid to say to keep the masses fooled. Carry on.

In this day and age, I feel like big secrets being withheld from the public work much like true leaks/spoilers making their rounds over the web. At one point, when a leak did happen it was taken at full value, but in recent years even if legit secrets/leaks emerge, society is already oversaturated with false/untrue information. In this case, it's extremely hard to determine the truth from the flutter.
Having said that, I know there are big time R&D that has went on and is going on with the US that will not become common knowledge for many years. There is most definitely black operations allocated by the government, with money being funneled to the contractors for their budget of engineers and scientists. Most of this will make its way to the surface eventually, usually by way of DoD or DARPA. I also believe this is how it should be, to keep society in a stable environment, and to keep threats/enemies from gaining access to said R&D.
You could argue that there are some secrets that have been so only because of a select few who may have benefited from it(JFK assassination), as well as all of the black programs that were developed and used by the NSA for intelligence purposes at the cost of privacy. Sometimes good intentions end up doing more harm than good, but for the most part I believe man is inherently good and what is being done in the shadows is for the right reasons.
If I had to take a guess of a big secret being withheld at the moment, I would lean towards a big achievement or understanding in energy. There's talk traveling through the scientific community at the moment on zero point energy. It's all highly debated, with probably as many people calling it a dead end as others are researching it. With the Wikileaks and government documents tossing the same name around, it makes me wonder. I actually hope there's some merit to it, not because I care if big oil takes a plunge(our economy is far too dependent on it), but because it would open up tremendous opportunities when we finally start being space-faring.
I won't even get into aliens, there's just too much flutter circulating the planet to make a judgement call. I do believe they are out there, possibly even aware of us, as well as millions of Earth-like planets with non-advanced life, but since we haven't been wiped out instantly yet, I'm gonna assume it's a pointless topic for now.

I think the biggest secret being kept by the government is the level of information collection being done on all of us, and how much they know about each of us. We have an idea of it, but I still think people think, for the most part, that the government spies on "other people," and not them. You might think you're not important enough to be tracked, but I assure you - you are.

Current human society is a reboot of a lost great civilization (almost completely destroyed in a comet/asteroid impact on the North American ice cap approx 12K years ago). The few survivors of this catastrophe spread throughout the world to spread knowledge to the more primitive cultures that co-existed. The very upper echelon of people /priests/ heirophants who received this knowledge formed the mystery schools. The mystery schools later became the roots of the secrets societies of today. They worship a "religion" that can be best described as "Mystery Babylon" (they worship progress by all means necessary, see above). Those folks have turned their backs on the masses and are drunk/perverted by their own power.
Events have occurred within the last year that lead me to believe that we are getting closer to this information coming to light. An end of an age (as foretold by some teachings) if you will....
