You may be right there I know they are insured and the occasional accident may indeed be profitable in some weird way. The airlines get a black eye for a short period and come up with a supposed cause and move along I guess.

A dirty secret is that airlines insure these planes for full replacement cost and it is very profitable for an airline if they "lose" a plane.

Yeah, that is why so many are intact sitting in the desert.

Most airlines don't outright own their planes they lease them, especially the newer ones.

Correct .. Most policy's state that if a plane is not usable for 48 hours - regardless of reason - they are eligible for full replacement cost .. And must be paid by the insurance companies within 24 hours .. It really is crazy

I know the Mayalisa airline that disappeared had been written to under 100 million dollars on the books but was insured at full replacement cost. The airline received close to 300 million dollars .. They had their best quarter ever in 2014 when that plane disappeared ..

Are you serious? Their losses rose 59% after the MH370. And how can a used 777-200ER be insured for more than $39 million of it's new price?

Pretty good article on the topic

ETA: I was off a tad but they recorded over 250 million dollars in profit after the plane was lost

I haven't done the research but I'm pretty darn sure people aren't falling over each other to fly with Malaysian Airlines at the moment.

I flew Singapore Airlines* last month by choice with (obviously) no negative issues. If you've ever flown Singapore Airlines, you'll understand. I'd be confident to fly Malaysian Airlines tomorrow.

*sister airline to Malaysian Airlines
