would public schools even be an option for kids around here?

I think Hynes is supposed to be a good public school but really I don't know.

I bet you can find a 3/2 in the Irish Channel for ~400k. Will need some work, though.

i understand there's a debate on the board about safety in the city, but that area is still a bit seedy?

Yeh but it is common remember? Making 200k at mid 30 and turning your first house for 180k is easy man

200k combined salary for a mid 30's married couple who are both professionals isn't outlandish at all.

I understand that most people aren't that highly educated, but 200k isn't out of reach for two people with graduate degrees.

You could do Hynes and then Ben Franklin. Not many people in Lakeview actually do that.

Franklin is a good school. Hynes has a nice facility, but not sure about their actual program.

Most go to St. Pius, St Dominic, St Louis or St. Pauls. All in between $8-10K/yr.

Without kids I'd live there in a second. It is still seedy relative to Lakeview but I think it is on the way up. Just stay well clear of Walmart. The biggest problem down there, imo, is the tiny lots relative to the houses (which is true in much of NO).

I don't see why someone would pay so much extra to live in Lakeview. You're not really within walking distance to anything, except for that row of businesses on Harrison. Why not just live in Metairie and save a ton of money?

I think it's a crappy area with bad bad roads. But of course, I'm not from nola so apparently I don't know what's nice.

People are starting to do this with Bucktown I think. Though a lot of women still want the cache of saying they live in Lakeview which is funny as that was never the case prior to Katrina.

For Lakeview money you can get into some parts of Old Metairie.

That is where I would look.

Well, the good parts of Metairie really aren't a ton cheaper. Not sure if you've seen what is happening in old Metairie, but it is insane what the prices are and they are too.

Even on the lake side of Veterans they are tearing shite down and building $500K houses left and and right.

Looks like we are getting our housing boom 6 years after the rest of the country.

As a parent with young kids... the horrible streets is a plus, you don't have to worry about speeding on your street!

Well that is def. one way to look at it.
Last month my family and I went to eat at the Broken Egg. On the street next do it was one of the biggest potholes I've ever seen in person. Someone had stuck some crap it in as well as a parking cone or two.
