I'd reconsider this plan. After a year you will probably, and your wife will definitely, be tired of the road and want a house again. You will sell all of these toys at a loss and have to move into a shittier house than you were previously accustomed to. At that point, your wife will leave you with half of your retirement.

We're already camper people. We spend a good deal of our time in our camper and like it. During the summer she and the kids already will go to the lake and spend up to a couple weeks at a time at our camper while I come up on weekends or if I have spare vacation, I'll also come up for a few days as well.

And like I said earlier. After spending about a year or so seeing the whole country, we'll settle in and start spending our winters in one place and summers in another.

I imagine I'll end up wherever my kids/grandkids end up, but I still want a summer house on Whidbey Island in Washington.

I will move to some poor country in Southeast Asia and use my retirement funds to pay barely legal peasant girls to love me long time.

You think folks aren't peeing and spooging in Ritz Carltons as well? Naive much?

For the record, I like hotels (decent ones, at least) fine.

My neighbors have it right.

They fall/winter here in LA and they spring/summer in their lakehouse in Wisconsin.

He told me as soon as it gets below 40 up there, they head south, and as soon as it gets above 80 down here, they head north

I plan to work 7 more years (puts me at 62). We'll probably end up staying right where we are but the other idea we've tossed around is moving closer to wherever our baby girl ends up (probably in Texas). If we do that we'll sell the house to our son at a really cheap price and buy a little house. I just want to play golf 3 or 4 times a week and maybe fish a little.

Hotel room tests uncover high levels of contamination

quote:

Warriner was also surprised that high-end hotels were no cleaner than budget ones.

Budget hotel Super 8 had among the cleanest bathrooms in the study, Warriner said.

'If you're going to pay the extra money for a top-end hotel, don't expect to have better sanitation.'
— Microbiologist Keith Warriner
"The top-end hotels, they all really performed equally as bad," he said.

A Montreal Best Western had among the overall best results, whereas some of the dirtiest bathroom surfaces were found in Fairmont rooms.

"If you're going to pay the extra money for a top-end hotel, don't expect to have better sanitation," he added.

A microscopic look at hotel hygiene

quote:

Philip Tierno doesn't feel comfortable staying in hotels. He knows too much.
The microbiologist travels with an impervious mattress and pillow cover to protect against the unseen debris that guests leave behind in what he compares to the lost Roman civilization, particles "literally buried over time" in the bed.
"What I'm saying is it's not just you in bed, it's who comes after you," said Tierno, director of microbiology and immunology at New York University's Langone Medical Center.
More disturbingly, it's who comes before you, too.

So go ahead and spend the extra money on an expensive hotel. All that will get you is the pleasure of wallowing in the feces, dead skin, jizz, snot, and all the other filth left behind by everyone that stayed in that room before you.. You'll just be getting it from people with a little bit more money than you'd find at the Motel 6.

Read the link I just posted above and then tell me who's being naive.

It doesn't matter how much you spend on a hotel room. It's still a Petri dish of filth left by however many people stayed there before you.

This, we have 3.5 acres near the lake, we have our camp but plan on tearing it down and rebuilding at some point in the future.
Other than that, we'll travel. Wife and I both grew up with campers and neither of us really want one again. Probably buy a Yukon XL or similar when we want to drive.

I'll be 62 this year. Inshallah Allah, I'll ride my current gig until I'm 66, at which time I collect about $32K per year from SS.

I should have by that time about $1 mil in investments, with an actuarial timeline of 16 years (although certainly less in my case).

So I've got maybe 7-10 years of retirement, which I plan to spend in the Philippines, Costa Rica or Thailand. A friend of mine, who owns a nightclub in Bangkok, has offered me a partnership in the venture which could speed up the process considerably. I am considering the offer as I write.

dealing with trashy campground people and their trashy little shithead kids
pulling a 50' camper in and out of traffic
driving having to listen to your wife whine and complain
